Could not read this book

The book is actually unreadable, at least for me. Maybe author is very knowledgeable, that's why I put 2 stars, not 1. Maybe lots of words and formulae really provide valuable information. But the book is not intended to teach. It is a pile of poorly explained facts, terms and words, which are incomprehensible. At least for the beginner like me.

This beautifully written gem should be required reading for anyone who feels they understand the Holocaust. Ursula Duba is brutally honest in her portrayal of "civilized" behavior in difficult circumstances. This book will take your conscience on a difficult trip by showing us that we are all responsible for protesting injustices in the world around us.

TALES FROM A CHILD OF THE ENEMY by Ursula Duba compels us to realize that the past is a state of mind. She carries us back into her childhood in post-war Germany, and then quietly returns us to the present. There, through our own time, Duba again carries us back, this time further and deeper and into the psyches of those who were witness to the inhumanity of the Third Reich. We realize that the events of another time and another place envelop and profoundly affect the way our present is seen and tolerated by certain individuals, people whom we might very easily know. We come to realize that their struggle, their understanding, and their insights can have profound influence on the world around us. That this is true, especially for those of us who presumed that our realtionship to the events of WWII and the Holocaust were non-existent or at least, very distant, is stunning. We are inescapably drawn into Duba's mind and heart by the deceptively conversational tone of her poems, by her easy description of events and issues which so quickly become as familiar to us as the events in our own lives. The lives of others and the "then" which has impacted so strongly upon them today, becomes a part of our own lives, our own now

Extraordinarily honest, courageous and sensitive!

In reading Duba's book, my first inclination was to be suspect of this German gentile who had the audacity to portray the Jewish experience of the Holocaust, but as I read the sequence of story poems that, like blocks, built a picture of the complex, multi-layered experience of all the participants, I began to soften and ultimately came over to join her in viewing the experience from her vantage point. Duba is brutally honest with herself, requiring me too, to examine my prejudices and stererotypes. Her courage to face herself and to face up to others gave me the encouragement to examine my experience, to face down some of my haunting demons and the manadate to speak out. - Second generation Holocaust survivo

She read my mind ...

Since rededicating my life three years ago, things have gone crazy. I am so thankful
for A. J.'s offering of what God has obviously directed her to write.
I swung by a Christian Bookstore in Bakersfield, on my way to Yosemite. I found "Messy Faith" on a sale stand and couldn't resist the title, cover and her opening thoughts. It's hard for me to get hooked in a book. I read a few paragraphs and found
myself pulling over to read a chapter.
What a relief. It seems so simple. She challenges us to be honest in our walk with Christ. When we do, things can get messy. I have been describing the past few years to my friends by saying, it's like God cleaning out my garage. There's so much there, He's deciding what stays and goes. In the meantime, the driveway is full of junk I don't need any more. Thank you, A. J. for writing the book that became my vacation this week. My intention was to do a lot of other things, I spent it with our loving God, letting Him use you to show me some very important things.

Renewing and Refreshing

During a vacation from an intense job/ministry with the homeless, I desired to read a good book that would be medicine for my weary soul. Messy Faith, was the right medicine, as if prescribed by Jesus to renew and encourage my faith. Not only is A.J. a highly gifted writer but she also has deep penetrating insights (and wit) into our human condition and God's transforming grace. Her authenticity and transparency about her own journey and brokenness (how refreshing), in the context of sound Biblical wisdom, makes Messy Faith a must read for all who truly dare to live by grace - and just maybe (like for me) you might also trust and love Him a little more. I am re- reading the book and look forward to reading more from A.J. Gregory!

Messy and Wonderful

The cross constructed out of duct tape on the front cover of "Messy Faith" is what drew my attention to this book. With disarming and refreshing honesty, A.J. Gregory paints a real life, sometimes gritty, sometimes hilarious journey of faith. Wherever you are in your walk of faith, this book is an incredible guide that essentially explores success and failure along with issues of addiction. Simply put, whenever any person of faith leans on anything other than God first, addiction can take over, lead to sin and away from God. Read this book and then read it again. It's simply wonderful.

In Chocolate Islands: Cocoa, Slavery, and Colonial Africa, Catherine Higgs traces the early-twentieth-century journey of the Englishman Joseph Burtt to the Portuguese colony of S�o Tom� and Pr�ncipe—the chocolate islands—through Angola and Mozambique, and finally to British Southern Africa. Burtt had been hired by the chocolate firm Cadbury Brothers Limited to determine if the cocoa it was buying from the islands had been harvested by slave laborers forcibly recruited from Angola, an allegation that became one of the grand scandals of the early colonial era. Burtt spent six months on S�o Tom� and Pr�ncipe and a year in Angola. His five-month march across Angola in 1906 took him from innocence and credulity to outrage and activism and ultimately helped change labor recruiting practices in colonial Africa.



This beautifully written and engaging travel narrative draws on collections in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Africa to explore British and Portuguese attitudes toward work, slavery, race, and imperialism. In a story still familiar a century after Burtt’s sojourn, Chocolate Islands reveals the idealism, naivety, and racism that shaped attitudes toward Africa, even among those who sought to improve the conditions of its workers.

Catherine Higgs is an associate professor of history at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is the author of The Ghost of Equality: The Public Lives of D.D.T. "As automatic as panicking."

Joana James has a secret formula for instant Christian success. Well, no, it's not instant, but it will work. These "wisdom bursts" were tougher to write than the first book in the series, I bet, but so necessary. We want to worry, we want to pick up that burden we were supposed to let Jesus have, we want to ask friends instead of asking God. James sets all these normal human behaviors up like tin cans on a fence ail and shoots them right off, pop, pop, pop. Through dark times, through tough times, through the "over and over" times we fail to be like God, we have to listen to these simple, practical lessons. Get up. Go on. Trust God.
