An Immensely Informative,and Entertaining Book with Nice Pictures

Despite being published almost 30 years ago this book remains a major source of the architectural and social history of the British country house in its last period of flowering between 1890 and 1939. The author divdes the houses/architecture he describes to fall into two {2} distinct era's / categories - 1890 to 1914 with the Edwardian country house bringing luxury to a peak of opulence, social and political power and 1918 -1939 when this Edwardian luxury was considered unseemly {and unnecessary} and a new breed of country house was created - homes that were smaller, simpler and their interiors and decor being based more on older architectural styles and rural arts and crafts.
Pre 1914 Nouveaux Rich - William Waldorf Astor {Hever Castle}, Andrew Carnegie {Skibo Castle}, William James {West Dean Park} and a host of others built country houses as powerhouse monuments to their social and economic dominance that had little to do with the aristocratic concept of landownership and the owner responsibilities that went along with it. The country house servant, essential to these huge households functioning properly is minutely examined and how the new technology of labor saving devices {electricity, vacume cleaners and the automobile}was grafted into the pattern of country house life. The author postulates that the country house servant class was decimated by the deaths of so many of the male servants {prospective and otherwise} during WW1 as well as the changing working class attitudes towards domestic service becoming prevelant after WW1. The pre 1914 Edwardian country house concept collaspsed because of a lack of domestic servants.
However it is the period of 1918 -1939 in what the author describes as the "Romamtic Country House" whose builders eschewed modernism and luxury, harkening back to a pre-industrial age without the automobile that is the best written and most interesting section of the book. The architects who built these often eccentric homes often with scavenged parts of other old houses were with their clients an unknown chapter {to me} of the saga of the English Country House.
The author also describes the last {limited} gasp of large country house building and rehabilitation that was at odds with the on-going abandonment and demolition of so many homes due to financial constraints. The Edwardian Garden has its own separate chapter that describes its various guises from the formal fenced garden , Italian theme water gardens and gardens that became more informal in their design.
These garden's are described by the author as the intergal part of any country house - large and small. This is not a coffee table picture book with mostly glossy pictures and a limited text even though the pictures in this book are excellent - if mostly in black and white.
Additional books that I would reccommend to read in conjunction with this one would include "The Victorian Country House" by Mark Girouard {see my April 2010 review}, "The Rise of the Nouveaux Rich" by J. Mordaunt Crook,"The Rise of the Rich" by Jamie Camplin and {sadly}"The Destruction of the Country House 1875 -1975" by Roy Strong. Vita Sackville West's "The Edwardians" {ostensibly a work of fiction ?} nicely describes a large 1905 country house/ estate {Knole} the internal working of it's servant hierarchy, social, sporting obligations and illict shenanigans of the upper class to read as a microcausim of Edwardian Country House Society.
At the end of the book, the author includes an extensive catalogue of all the houses mentioned with their description, upgrading/rebuilding and their current status {1n 1982}. Mr Aslet has written a lucid, scholarily and informative book that is a "must read" for anyone interested in the English Country House. I highly reccommend this book and give it a strong five star rating.

Beautiful photos and descriptions. Makes you want to visit the area. The book was just as advertised. Good preparation for England.
