'Unofficially yours' cast its magic and I, as a reader, had no option but to sink in. Great book!

I can't recommend this book highly enough! I really didn't know what the term legalist meant, even though I had been in legalistic,performance-based churches most of my life. What surprises me about Andrew Wommack's books and television ministry is that I barely knew they existed (even though his main ministry headquarters) is a few miles from my home. I am hoping more people will be exposed to his books and ministry soon. Even though Andrew is a separate ministry from a church that meets at the Bible college here--I was curious as to what a church would look like (and be like at the core) that was in unity with what Andrew is teaching and writing about. Ahhh! Breath of fresh air. I've been a Christian for many decades, but didn't really have a correct view of the nature of God. Glimpses, yes. But I believe Andrew's book and what he is teaching on TV is more accurate that most anything I've read or seen. I have seen and read several who are in agreement though--and actually Andrew's books and teachings are bringing it together for me. I did read the one semi-critical view of Andrew's book. And it is food for thought. I am rarely (if ever) so enamoured of any personality (except Jesus) to blindly swallow everything that is said. There is some validity to the view of the OT in that review that may be a little weak in Andrew's book. But the true nature of God and His grace and the clear explanation do outweigh those possible weaknesses for me. Obviously God is so deep and wide, we aren't going to get a full picture of His nature in this lifetime or in one book. But I think this one book of Andrew's is such a great start for either a new believer or an old believer like me who never got balanced teaching. As for Andrew writing and talking like a Texas hick (I've read and heard him say that himself) I'd like to say that I come out of a totally different backround than Andrew--but that doesn't turn me off.(As long as Andrew doesn't pomade his hair and scream that Jeezuss will love me more if I give seed faith gift of a specific amount, I'm OK with hickdom.) I actually believe Andrew might consider not even mentioning it anymore! LOL! (I've had a little experience in the Christian writing field--and Andrew's writing style is actually very good.) Whether you are a Cambridge don like C.S. Lewis, a "hick" like Andrew; educated like the Apostle Paul or a crude fisherman like the Apostle Peter--who cares as long as you are speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That's all it boils down to. Actually what inspires me about Andrew's teachings and writings (besides the fact I believe he is Holy-Spirit inspired) is his balance on the charasmatic. I've been in both kind of churches--those who believe the gifts passed after the last NT apostle died--and those who are into charasmatic excesses that make me spiritually ill. If you read enough of Andrew's books--and listen to his TV shows for a couple of months (it took me months and months to get the big picture cause I'd been burned by other teachers who sounded good at first) you can discern the balance there. And that balance comes from really seeing the whole of the OT and NT with God's grace and mercy. Yes, I do agree the wrath and judgment of God are a little glossed over on TV and in the books. That's something I am watching and learning. But overall--his book is very helpful. I am not totally sure obviously of all his teaching motives--but I suspect one motive is--to almost deprogram people who have been in legalistic, God-as-only-wrathful, performance-based churches. Or people who have been in wildly unbalanced charismatic churches. At any rate--his book and TV shows have had almost a deprogramming effect on me.

I had a special interest in Chapter 4 of this book, titled "The woman who can see with her ears", because I have been personally deeply involved in Pat Fletcher's quest to regain a form of sight after being totally blind for many years. So it was the first chapter I read after receiving the book. Adam Piore does an excellent job of describing Pat Fletcher's use of technology - known as "The vOICe" - that encodes the live view of a camera in the form of soundscapes. These soundscapes by design preserve much of the visual content and thus enable blind people to "see" (with or without the quotes remains a point of ongoing debate). Human brain plasticity combined with a consistent mapping from images to sounds caused the visual areas in Pat Fletcher's brain to be recruited for processing soundscapes with visual content, as demonstrated by brain scanning and transcranial magnetic stimulation experiments at Harvard Medical School. This book reads like a sci fi thriller. A fascinating read.

OK for the Basics

I shoot mainly high school sports, and bought the camera for the high fps and the autofocus system, I'm a fan of the Snapshots to Great Shots series was hoping for more in-depth info into the AF cases and how/when to use/customize the AF cases - but there is only one page of content on this topic.

This book was more of a "just the basics" approach, and anyone who suggest shooting action in AV mode (you set the aperture where your camera decides the shutter speed) will pretty much cause me to loose interest as your choice in shutter speed determines whether or not you freeze/blur action. With this camera you can set the shutter speed/aperture in manual mode to freeze action and max out the aperture and use auto ISO plus exposure compensation to better control the challenging lighting situations of outdoor sports - it's clean enough for my needs up to ISO 3200, and usable with NR up to ISO 10000.

If you are an advanced user looking to dig in menu by menu, get Doug Klosterman's Canon 7D Mark II Experience book.

Entry Level Guide

Expected some advance discussion here. This book was written for someone who got a 7D Mark II as their first camera. Did not at all go into advanced features of this camera like multi-exposure like I was seeking. The first Snap Shot book I order on my earlier 60D was written much better.

I am not even sure how to describe this book. It is not an in depth study of the 7D Mark-II. But it does reference some of the 7D Mark-II settings. It goes into a lot of general photography but not in depth. It is an OK book but you will not learn to use the 7D Mark-II from this book.

A Horrific Love Story

I’ve come to expect surprises from author Liliana V. Blum. I’ve been impressed by her ability to concisely draw interesting and consistent characters with whom I can easily identify, but just when I think I know where she’s headed, she’s always a step ahead of me. I was certain this time that the surprise was that Pandora was a love story… Well, maybe it is, but if so, it’s certainly the most horrific love story I’ve ever read.

The story revolves around the competition for the affections of Gerardo, a handsome, successful doctor in a hospital in an unnamed city in Mexico. The female staff members view him as the perfect man, and many pursue him, despite his apparently perfect marriage to Abril, and their perfect twins. Meanwhile, Gerardo, a gynecologist, has become so desensitized and withdrawn that on an outing to a strip club, he wants to write a prescription for one of the dancers.

The 2 women in Gerardo’s life are Abril and Pandora. Abril spends her scarce free time exercising and dieting, because she constantly feels she doesn’t deserve her exalted role as wife and mother of the children of such a handsome, successful man. Gerardo actually finds Abril physically repugnant, but his communication skills are such a disaster that he has allowed a terrible but correctible tension to build between them for many years.

Pandora has experienced a lifetime of obesity. She has accepted this as her lot in life, but the author explores in considerable depth the emotional toll of a lifetime of pain, humiliation and anonymity that go hand in hand with being morbidly obese. When Pandora inadvertently triggers an obsession in Gerardo, she is extraordinarily vulnerable, and emotionally unprepared for the course of events he initiates. The Pandora metaphor is highly appropriate. When she opens the box, all manner of human evils emerge, building to a memorable climax.

As a man, I would have liked to understand Gerardo better, but the book isn’t really about him. It’s about the women. It’s about the lines they draw between love and obsession, between sacrifice and abuse. It’s about pain and yearning, about communication and the all but unbelievable things we are prepared to do for love.

This is a powerful book, and one that will stay with me for a long time. Liliana Blum just keeps growing stronger as a writer.

La novela describe sin concesiones la atroz realidad de la obesidad y de una terrible patolog�a relacionada con esa enfermedad. De una forma realista la autora Liliana V. Blum (Durango, 1974), va presentando la sintomatolog�a que padecen Gerardo y Pandora, y tambi�n las de la anor�xica Abril, la esposa de Gerardo, y la de la obsesiva madre de Pandora. Con un lenguaje muy cuidado, el ritmo de la narraci�n de la crueldad y del erotismo implicado, va aumentando la tensi�n en el lector al mismo tiempo que Gerardo va haciendo que Pandora se pregunte “�C�mo pudiste terminar as�?” cuando llega a los doscientos kilos.

Fascinating Read

Brilliantly written, THE FREAK OBSERVER takes the reader on a journey through Loa's intriguing mind as she tries to deal with the events taking place in the present while making sense of her past. Told in the first person, the character's unique voice draws the reader in as Loa discloses challenging situations in her life and family. The full story gradually unfolds, building toward a satisfying resolution as Loa seeks to make sense of her life through a keen sense of observation, analysis, and emotion.

A clever, funny and emotionally charged read.

Blythe Woolston's first novel is cleverly written and captivating. The narrative character of Loa, is a complex, candid and often humorous one. Although Loa is a strong and extraordinary young woman with troubling nightmares, uncommon responsibilities and a shocking childhood past, she is still a girl easy to relate to and easy to love. Poignant and touching, this story has a natural and easy flow that sucks in the reader, making them desperate to know how it all turns out for poor Loa Lindrgren.

This is an amazingly funny, yet tragic story about Loa Lindgren, a girl who is suffering from PTSD ...

All Loa got for her troubles was a smack upside the head with a toilet plunger. No "I'm soooo glad you are safe." No "I love you," just a dirty old plunger. "Same-ol, same-ol" in the Lindgren family. Her friend, Esther, had been splattered across the road by a truck. She could picture her running down the embankment and then . . . the driver was out in the road yelling and puking. The trooper had tried to console her in his own funny way by saying that some people ran toward an accident while others ran away. So what kind of person just froze in place and time? Her only consolation prize was that plunger and her father saying, "You could'a been the dead one." It wouldn't be very long before Loa probably wished she was.

Mrs. Bishop, the guidance counselor at school, wasn't much help and everyone else thought of her as "that dead girl's friend" and that simply wasn't cool. Loa had a "glitch in [her] brain" and in her dreams she saw Esther's heart in the laundry basket. She didn't want to sleep because she'd see that heart. Cleaning all night solved that, but she couldn't stay awake forever. They used to call it "shellshock," but now it's called PTSD. They gave Loa six weeks of "grief counseling" because of her screaming at night and nightmares that brought everything back. At the end of her counseling she was supposed to be all cured up, but she knew that Esther couldn't "be alive and dead at the same time like Schr�dinger's imaginary cat." Esther was dead and that was that.

It used to be that everyone had their own little orbit around her younger sister, Asta. Now "there were pages missing from Asta's book" and everyone had to tend to her because she never walked, talked, and had to wear diapers. Even Little Harold's life evolved around her until "The Bony Guy" came to get her. Loa knew she had problems and knew that "At least 25 percent of trauma victims have repetitive dreams of the event with feelings of intense rage, fear, or grief," but when the heck was she going to recover from this funk? Was anyone ever going to look at her instead of seeing a dead girl in her eyes? Was the best she was going to get was a toilet plunger up the side of her head?

This is an amazingly funny, yet tragic story about Loa Lindgren, a girl who is suffering from PTSD. Loa is so into her own mind that her intellect isn't quite holding hands with reality. The story emanates from the inner reaches of her mind. We not only learn about her fears, but also in this tragicomedy we are treated to Loa's remarkable sense of humor. For example, when someone tells her to take care she claims she won't be responsible for her actions if she hears it again because she knows how to take care. "I can wash dishes, pull out slivers, sharpen a chainsaw, thaw out frozen pipes, pack a lunch, mop floors, serve five hot plates to a table, get poop out of little boy's underwear, and sterilize a nasogastric tube." I haven't read such a good YA novel in some time and had a hard time putting it down. If you want to read a stunning, well written tragicomedy, this is definitely the book to pick up!

An Immensely Informative,and Entertaining Book with Nice Pictures

Despite being published almost 30 years ago this book remains a major source of the architectural and social history of the British country house in its last period of flowering between 1890 and 1939. The author divdes the houses/architecture he describes to fall into two {2} distinct era's / categories - 1890 to 1914 with the Edwardian country house bringing luxury to a peak of opulence, social and political power and 1918 -1939 when this Edwardian luxury was considered unseemly {and unnecessary} and a new breed of country house was created - homes that were smaller, simpler and their interiors and decor being based more on older architectural styles and rural arts and crafts.

Pre 1914 Nouveaux Rich - William Waldorf Astor {Hever Castle}, Andrew Carnegie {Skibo Castle}, William James {West Dean Park} and a host of others built country houses as powerhouse monuments to their social and economic dominance that had little to do with the aristocratic concept of landownership and the owner responsibilities that went along with it. The country house servant, essential to these huge households functioning properly is minutely examined and how the new technology of labor saving devices {electricity, vacume cleaners and the automobile}was grafted into the pattern of country house life. The author postulates that the country house servant class was decimated by the deaths of so many of the male servants {prospective and otherwise} during WW1 as well as the changing working class attitudes towards domestic service becoming prevelant after WW1. The pre 1914 Edwardian country house concept collaspsed because of a lack of domestic servants.

However it is the period of 1918 -1939 in what the author describes as the "Romamtic Country House" whose builders eschewed modernism and luxury, harkening back to a pre-industrial age without the automobile that is the best written and most interesting section of the book. The architects who built these often eccentric homes often with scavenged parts of other old houses were with their clients an unknown chapter {to me} of the saga of the English Country House.

The author also describes the last {limited} gasp of large country house building and rehabilitation that was at odds with the on-going abandonment and demolition of so many homes due to financial constraints. The Edwardian Garden has its own separate chapter that describes its various guises from the formal fenced garden , Italian theme water gardens and gardens that became more informal in their design.

These garden's are described by the author as the intergal part of any country house - large and small. This is not a coffee table picture book with mostly glossy pictures and a limited text even though the pictures in this book are excellent - if mostly in black and white.

Additional books that I would reccommend to read in conjunction with this one would include "The Victorian Country House" by Mark Girouard {see my April 2010 review}, "The Rise of the Nouveaux Rich" by J. Mordaunt Crook,"The Rise of the Rich" by Jamie Camplin and {sadly}"The Destruction of the Country House 1875 -1975" by Roy Strong. Vita Sackville West's "The Edwardians" {ostensibly a work of fiction ?} nicely describes a large 1905 country house/ estate {Knole} the internal working of it's servant hierarchy, social, sporting obligations and illict shenanigans of the upper class to read as a microcausim of Edwardian Country House Society.

At the end of the book, the author includes an extensive catalogue of all the houses mentioned with their description, upgrading/rebuilding and their current status {1n 1982}. Mr Aslet has written a lucid, scholarily and informative book that is a "must read" for anyone interested in the English Country House. I highly reccommend this book and give it a strong five star rating.

Possibly the ' overall ' " BEST " Chess book ever written...

do you play chess, then simply you must own this book? The title is all wrong if you think it is for kids; my chess rating is not very high so i cannot speak for chess experts...
But for anyone under the chess expert level this is probably the greatest chess book ever written, there are many chess books and i own around 75 (and i look at them as well, they do not always just collect dust). So as an 'improving' player this one book will EASILY add 200 points to whatever your rating is if you follow the advice and tips in this single book...
It starts with basic stuff like how to play chess and also talks about 'rook lifts' and the "x-ray"; just a ton of essential chess knowledge in one book, seriously there is months or years worth of chess learning here depending upon your level of chess involvement...
Please do not under-estimate this book; this is a SERIOUS book, now in its SIXTH 'revised' edition. In fact most modern kids probably would not even be able to understand this book unless they are "chess players"...
This one book is simply the best introduction or refresher 'course' to the overall areas of chess knowledge, your chess development will speed along far faster if you consider this books' "contents" as you consider your chess 'moves'.
Again i must say this is THE chess book to OWN; it MUST be your first, second or third chess book to follow; now just buy it, or just ' find ' the time and money and " hire " your own personal chess ' coach ' instead...

A great book that covers a lot of material in a friendly way!

This book was recommended to me by NM Dan Heisman. I did not underestimate the "for kids" suffix to the title the second time in a row given that the last book I thought I was "too advanced" for was Bain's Chess Tactics. Big mistake ... I couldnt' solve all the problems under a few seconds each and that clearly brought to light what seperates the good tactical players from the ones who think they are good.

So I approached this book promising myself that I wouldn't skim pages even if the material was basic.

Boy, was I surprised!

This book certainly does not structure the lessons (Tactics, middle-game strategy, endings) in a set order, and while I initially thought it was too chaotic, I realized that if you're writing for kids, you certainly shouldn't worry. Kids (and certain adults like me) dislike monotony and I certainly wouldn't want an instructive book on chess to read like an academic text.

The hops in the "chess knowledge" between two consecutive lessons are sometimes wild and catches a lower-intermediate player (I'm a USCF 1500-rated adult at the time of writing this) off guard enough to warrant a serious read. For example , One lesson talks about the basics of a fianchetto, and you're skimming through it saying "yeah, I know this stuff" but you are stopped cold when you notice that the next one is a lesson on Pawn Rams/Levers that you seldom find in instructional material directed at kids!

Cartoony-illustrations and a fairly ticklish sense of humor do help the material get across and there are tons of tactical exercises that one can use for practice.

On the whole, I'd recommend this book to anybody who makes the mistake of rushing into advanced texts (My System, Reassess your chess) and feels lost at sea.

Any kid (even one who just started playing chess) who reads this book is going to start putting his rooks behind passed pawns, understand what opposite-colored bishops mean in endgames and reach Lucena/Philidor positions and a whole lot more!

While Coakley's book doesn't give you a means to instantly make your chess better, it instead provides a checklist to make sure that you haven't missed out anything fundamental, which IMHO is the most horrific mistake any aspiring tournament player could make.

Not Really for Kids

The only thing about this book "for kids" is the simple verbal explanations and the somewhat random, yet logically progressive, organization of the material. Neither of these issues is a drawback for the adult student; and the simple language is, in fact, welcome in a book that covers such a technical subject as chess strategy. Coakley mixes tactical exercises (typically nine to a page, preceded by three sample exercises for practice) with essays on strategic concepts, along with little vignettes about chess culture. Each section is one to five pages in length. The following are the specific types of sections in the book:

Essays on Strategy (labeled as 'Kiril's Class')

These are 3-6 page essays on strategic concepts, which range from basic understandings like 'rooks belong behind passed pawns', to more advanced topics like 'attacking the castled king's position' and 'pawn play'. Some of these topics are found hidden in other more advanced books like Pawn Power in Chess or Art of Attack in Chess, so kids getting exposed to them in their first book on chess strategy can only be a good thing. Coakley doesn't get bogged down with variations or oversimplify. Some of the more advanced strategic essays even build on tactics exercises given earlier in the book. In this sense, the book is structured well, despite its seemingly random organization.

Tactics Exercises (labeled 'Combo Mombo' and 'Tactics 101'):

Coakley gives a brief explanation of a tactical motif (all are included) and then follows up with three practice exercises and nine "test" exercises.

Chess Lingo:

Here Coakley discusses specific strategic topics and nomenclature, like "zugzwang," "square of the pawn," or "en passant." These sections are mixed with small vignettes about chess culture and tournament manners.

For the stronger player, this books could serve as a nice refresher course in basic chess strategy. The book is complete in its scope and treats sophisticated material in a straightforward way. For the beginner, the book is an excellent introduction to chess strategy, because it ramps-up the technical material in an appropriate manner and includes many topics not covered in less ambitious texts for kids.

Can I Keep My Winnings?

Diane is a lawyer who has opened her own business and she isn't doing so well. She's lost her car, her apartment, and is living in her office. When Emma rings her doorbell on a Sunday, she's convinced it's probably a bill collector, yet she answers the door to find Emma asking for help. She is the winner of a $73
million dollar lotto ticket and her time is running out. She has 24 hours to claim it or it's gone. She hasn't turned it in because of some issues and secrets that she doesn't want aired again in the newspaper. What Emma wants is for Diane to keep the judge from letting her name be attached to the winnings. Since California and most states use the money to supplement their schools, it's going to be a hard job. Diane has to find a good reason for keeping her name from the media. She immediately begins searching for ways to keep it quiet.

24 HOUR LOTTERY an interesting story and brought up a lot of information that most citizens don't have when it comes to winning the lottery. It was informative and slightly mysterious as the reader waits for the final outcome. Emma, Diane, and the judge's characteristics were well developed. The book kept you on the edge of your chair while you waited for the outcome. It was definitely worth reading.

Would make a good movie

You might initially think that 24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a bit of a paradox. Afterall, who in their right mind would hesitate to turn in a $73 million lottery ticket? As it turns out, Emma Watkins seems to have a valid reason. She just needs Dianne Canton's help to persuade an unsympathetic judge that her fear is bona fide. Dianne is skeptical, but is so down on her luck that she is willing to make the effort.

With economic times being what they are, the dire circumstances that Dianne finds herself in is very believable. The other characters in this book are also convincing and well fleshed out. I could especially envision Emma, with her critical attitude and unedited emissions.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a fast paced novel that you won't want to put down. The ending has a good twist, but also left me wanting more answers. Perhaps there will be a follow up novel? In the meantime, I wouldn't mind seeing this on the big screen.

Great New Addition to The 'Law and Order' Genre

Who could refuse $73 million dollars?

Emma Watkins, a sixty-something disbarred judge with a heart of flint won't cash in her winning lottery ticket unless she can have the prize and remain anonymous. Emma needs a lawyer.

Dianne Canton, who skidded by to pass the California bar exam on the fifth try, is Emma's choice for her champion.

Readers will be intrigued to learn that even a well-funded effort to recall a judge can give some bad guys a chance to coverup their crimes, launder batches of money, kill a few people, and destroy anyone who gets in the way of their greed.

Gayle Tiller's courtroom ace, Dianne, juggles her personal, financial and romantic problems with the support of too much rocky road ice cream and Emma's hilarious and frequent swift verbal kicks to the backside of Dianne's legal briefs.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket entertains, puzzles and surprises every step of the way, down to the final minutes when the prize money hangs in the balance. Emma has secrets, as does the star witness for Dianne's case, the cranky judge hearing the arguments, and a succession of infuriating bureaucrats who stand in the way of justice. And, yes, Dianne has her own trunk full of relevant secrets as well.

I was intrigued and happily annoyed by the gruff Emma and mystified as to her motives. Dianne's rundown office, expanding waist line, and disarrayed life amuses because they promise to be fixable issues, once the poor lawyer catches a break. Tiller makes both lawyer and client come alive through their human failings, all-too-human hopes, and funny, witty jibes.

The plot line is wonderfully convoluted, just enough to keep us asking "what happens next?" without crossing the line into "that doesn't seem realistic."

Readers who like John Grisham's and Lisa Scottolini's fictional lawyers and their plights will be glad to offer partnerships in the legal genre firm to Dianne Canton and Gayle Tiller. Here's hoping both return again and again.
