About the Author
Harry Cather started as an apprentice Mechanical Engineer. His initial studies were part-time and concluded in becoming a C.Eng through the Institute of Production Engineers (now amalgamated with the IEE). He continued gaining knowledge, partially through courses, experience and other learning processes leading to an MBA and MSc. Being a “good” engineer, led him to study management in addition to engineering and he is a member of CMI and an associate member of IBA.Before joining the University of Brighton, his career was in support functions from Industrial/Production Engineering through Project Management to Workshop Management. In addition to engineering, he has worked in a wide variety of industries from mining to food, including three foreign postings.He is involved in TCS schemes and has carried out assignments for BESO, a volunteer organisation that assists in transferring technology to developing countries.Harry has recently set up as Industrial Consultant and welcomes any queries at harry@consultca.co.uk.

Don't overlook this valuable book...

I have studied Qi gong for many years, and have read many books on it...most I have found lacking. But this book seems to have a profound spiritual basis and I have discovered wonderful things in it that i have not elsewhere. The critical problem this book suffers from is that it is a narrative style only...there badly needs to be a didactic picture and instruction section. This could be done separately as a workbook, but as it is, I'm having to go through slowly and create cards/diagrams that I can follow, based on the text. But it is worth it...I believe that this book contains many 'secrets' of Qi Gong practice...I encourage the author to produce an illustrated step by step manual to help us out!!

This is the one to get, really

I've got a large collection of Qigong books, and have reviewed a number of them at Amazon, and given quite a few of them 5 stars. Well, Baolin Wu's book goes beyond any star system, literally. This book will give you background information that I promise you is missing from every other book in your collection (including my beloved "Embyonic Breathing" and "Roots of Chinese Qigong", from Yang Jwing-Ming).

I don't know if it's the best book for a true novice, hard to say. It reads very "Chinese", meaning it doesn't stay focused on topic all the time. He kind wanders off into tangents, but then returns to the original point. I suspect some readers may be put off by this. But I love it, because it reflects my own way of thinking.

The system being described is "Nine Palaces" Qigong, and you can look at the preview to get a good sense of where it's taking you. This is pretty much all the Qigong a person needs, in order to start turning back the clock and returning to the original essence. There are so many deep insights contained in this book that you really have to be careful when reading it, to make sure you don't skip past one profound statement or another.

Baolin Wu gives you in a single paragraph, in very blunt, precise language, insider information into Qigong practice that other authors spend chapters and entire books just kind of dancing around with yet never really telling what it's all about.

The illustrations are a little cheesy and not always very helpful, but some are actually quite beautiful in their own right.

This is hands down the best book on qigong I've ever seen. The writing is simple, yet extremely deep and advanced! The exercises are well explained and HIGHLY effective. If I could only recommend one book to someone on the subject, it'd definitely be this one.

Dissent as the Key to Maturity, an interesting read.

This is a relatively short book for a church history, containing seven chapters, of about 20 pages each, on what Kaatz believes to be key developments in the early church that are generally "under reported". It is not designed to be a comprehensive church history by any means.

The topics covered are: Chapter One: Paul and the Early Christians; Chapter Two: The Early Defenders of the Faith; Chapter Three: Marcion: A New Interpretation; Chapter Four: The Manichaeans; Chapter Five: The Christianizing of the Empire; Chapter Six: Arianism; Chapter Seven: The Power of the Bishops.

Kaatz writes with an awareness of critical issues such as the authenticity of the Pauline letters but does not make a big deal of such - though he states that the apostle Luke was the author of Luke (and Acts) without noting widespread scholarly dissent about this, so he is not overly critical focused in his scholarship, trying to answer every possible objection.

I enjoyed reading his book and think that it is a decent introduction to some interesting topics in church history, however this book is marred by sloppy editing, just too many instances of verbal nonsense or the wrong word - relying on spell check I assume.

Still if one can find it at the library, I definitely recommend reading it as it is not too scholarly in tone and the last two chapters are really interesting especially in light of continuing United States of America and Canadian government subsidies to religious organizations in the form of tax write-offs and exemptions.

I should add that there are numerous occasions where he makes rather debateable statements. One example is his claim (pages 27-28) that Gentile Christians did not mix Jewish and Christian traditions, while many Jewish Christians did without providing the evidence for such. Strangely, he even expects the Jewish communities to have repudiated Judaism rather than Pharisaic interpretations, perhaps, of such. I would also counter argue that Jewish festivals might be something that Gentiles could embrace without too much trouble as opposed to circumcision which their non-Christian Gentile neighbours would notice at the baths and gymnasia - their self mutilation would become evident in Greco-Roman culture. Indeed, if God fearers, that is Gentiles attending synagogue and community functions, had been a prime target of the early Christian mission while trying to win the Jews over, then I would expect God fearers to have participated in synagogue worship, study, meals, and community festivals and events prior to Christian conversion, even if they did not keep strict Jewish dietary laws and practice circumcision. Paul, though a missionary to the Gentiles had the habit of going first to the synagogue when he came to a new city, suggesting that he focused on converting the Gentiles that hung around the Jewish community as much as anyone else. Hence, I am not convinced that former Gentiles, now Christians, would have been so unattached to things Jewish. So to my mind some of his claims are questionable as in this example.

A handy reference book on future memories

This book is a short (270 pages), concise introduction to some of the promising memory technologies (such as FeRAM, MRAM, single electron memories, post-Si memories, etc.) that have or will soon see the light of day. It's not a treatise on the field but is more like a compendium of interesting memory technologies. Betty Prince who happens to be the CEO of Memory Strategies International has done an excellent job in summarizing the features, cell architectures, operational & fabrication issues, statistical trends and applications of around 50 or so promising memories. In every chapter she has included several illustrations as well as experimental plots collected from a very vast set of references.

Even though the book appears dated due to its publication date and given the pace at which the semiconductor industry advances, the technologies mentioned are surprisingly still under active development today.

One positive of this book is that there are very few equations. This is a book that is highly descriptive rather than being rigorous. You might not come away from this book with a mastery of the field of semiconductor memory technologies and design but you will atleast cultivate a good functional or working knowledge of future memories.

Recommended for students wanting to explore what's in store beyond SRAM, DRAM and Flash.

About the Author
Magdalena Droste studied art history and literature in Aachen and Marburg. She has worked at the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin since 1980 and is professor of art history at the BTU Cottbus since 1997. Droste has contributed to numerous exhibitions and publications on Bauhaus artists, besides writing a number of essays on the furniture and textile workshops at the Bauhaus and on arts and crafts as a women’s profession.

Peter G�ssel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several architecture titles in the Basic Art Series.
