The appearance in translation of a novel by a Nobel Laureate is cause for rejoicing, even when it sits less comfortably in English than in the original Hebrew. A story of a marriage, it takes place in Szybusz, a fictional town in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Blume Nacht, after her mother's death, becomes a servant in the house of cousins, whose son Hirshl falls in love with her. Blume, beautiful and almost superhumanly capable, repudiates Hirshl, a bit of a simpleton. He, when pressed by his substantial parents, slips bewilderedly into marriage with Mina, a heavily cologned boarding-school graduate. Blume meanwhile moves to another household and is rarely seen again, leaving the reader's expectations unfulfilled. Hirshl's too, for she is ever-present in his heart, stunting his sexual relationship with Mina and driving him from melancholy to madness. That he recovers, returns to his wife, and begins to find in what had been an emptyheaded, passive girl robust sensuality and social understanding, seems to reflect his emerging maturity and acceptance of the bourgeois solidity represented by his parents and the town itself. Agnon's achievement is to have combined gentle mockery of the myriad characters he brings so engagingly to life with staunch championing of values and customs that were soon to be doomed. His scholarship and literary astuteness inform a story that is at once rich in biblical allusion and redolent of the society in which he was raised. December

Nobel Laureate Agnon died in 1970 with several works not translated into English; it is good to have now this readable and entertaining Simple Story published originally in 1935. Blume Nacht, newly orphaned, goes to the town of Szybusz to live with her Aunt Tsirl and Uncle Boruch Hurvitz, shop owners there, and their son Hirshl. Blume and Hirshl fall in love, but Tsirl has other plans for her Hirshl. She meets with the matchmaker, and soon Hirshl finds himself beneath the wed ding canopy with Mina Ziemlich, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, though he stills pines away for sweet Blume. Before very long, Hirshl and Mina have a child, and with a twist of Old World simplicity, they live happily ever after. What becomes of Blume? A mystical journy to the jewish east european town.

The forground of this book is very simple: a young man hopelessly falls in love for a woman he can't marry. But in the background a deep psychological plot slowly evolves and carries the reader to the complex world of the Jewish towns in Eastern Europe before WW 2. Agnon as usual is very perceptive, very smart and writes with his wonderful combination of humor,cynicism and compassion.

Chronicle of a way of life curtailed

This is indeed a simple story, simply told, of events that are less than earth-shattering. It involves birth, marriage and death; matchmaking, love, commerce, travel to strange but not too distant places, religion, and a measure of scholarship; all the commonplace features of settled life as it moves through succeeding generations.

The setting is a fictionalized version of the author's birthplace, now Buchach, Ukraine, but at the time - along with the rest of Galicia - a backwater of the pre-World War I Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Russo-Japanese War and Dreyfus' acquittal provide noises off, dating the events described to about 1906, a couple of years before Agnon, at the age of 19, left Galicia for Palestine. He wrote the novel in 1935.

In common with many other central European towns and villages, Buchach was for several centuries prior to the Second World War a shtetl, a town dominated by a Jewish population whose way of life accorded with traditional Hebraic teaching. In A Simple Story, Agnon writes that the town had more than 15,000 people, of whom more than half were Jews. Rich or poor, master or servant, all the principal and all but a few minor characters in the novel are Jewish.

A large part of the interest of the novel derives from Agnon's portrayal of the shtetl way of life, which was permanently destroyed by the holocaust. The simple, deliberately naive tone adopted by the narrator is ideally suited to describing a life-style that was based on customs, traditions and inherited assumptions that, superficially at least, were accepted without close examination or question. Much of the legacy made a virtue of being antiquated, but the community was flexible enough to adapt to the times, and had probably always done so. Each generation prefers the ways in which things were done in its youth, or says it does; the novel suggests that where this relates to upholding family life, that may in fact be for the best.

A Simple Story is quiet, but thought provoking. The reader is liable to continue reflecting on it for some time after finishing it. Done well, simple requires an author of considerable but well-concealed sophistication. With this story, S Y Agnon provides an accomplished example. The afterword by translator Hillel Halkim offers a worthwhile bonus.

Enjoyable story set in the Jewish community of a small Ukrainian town at the turn of the century. It opens with a poor young Jewish girl being sent to live with her better-off shopkeeper relatives, after being left an orphan. However she is not the central character of the book - that is her relatives' teenage son, Hirschl. Will he and the good (but penniless) Blume be able to make a match? Or will he succumb to parental pressure for someone better for their son?...

The tale is narrated in a way that makes you feel, at times, that you are listening to a village story-teller entertaining an audience. From the opening sentence ('The widow Mirl lay ill for many years') it's as if he is talking to people who are familiar with the characters. Rhetorical questions and little homilies punctuate the writing.
I love the comic asides -one character, feeling 'out of it' at a party 'was perfectly presentable, yet unaccustomed to society as he was he kept touching himself to make sure that his tie was still in place and that his socks had not fallen down. He stood there uncertainly, running a hand over his clothes as though he had lice.'

Yet life is far from easy: as one character observes 'What a pitiful thing human life was. A man slept all night in order to rise in the morning, and looked forward all day to sleeping again at night. And between sleeping and waking, what a lot of guff he had to take.' When you finish reading this 'simple story', it makes you think about the way we are required to knuckle down to what society demands of us, and assume the mantle of adulthood.

4 Hearts for Dylan & Rachel

BADASS IN MY BED # 3 is the conclusion of this serial novella and what a great end to the series it was. Rachel's secret is out and Dylan reacts exactly as I suspect anyone would at the betrayal. His hurt, his sadness, his anger, his frustration, all of it drew me in. I don't blame him at all for the things he said to Rachel; he was deeply hurt and wanted to hurt her as much as she had hurt him. I loved him and he was definitely the best part of this book.

I never had a problem with Rachel until this final part. When her secret is revealed in front of Dylan, she can't stand the thought of him hating her, so she chases him, calls him and emails him in the hopes that she can explain things so that he won't hate her. But she can't tell him the truth, so all that chasing, calling and emailing was utterly useless and annoyed the hell out of me. What she was willing to do to achieve her dreams was terrible, and I can't decide if she agreed because she was silly or selfish. I'm glad she finally realised that the only person she needed to please was herself, that making decisions about her life for the approval and benefit of others was stupid and not worth it. She ended up making the right choice and it worked out very well for her in the end.

I've given each novella in this series 4 Hearts, but there are a couple of things that I have an issue with. Rachel's father is the main reason why she's worked so hard to get to where she was aiming for. She's apparently out to please a man that simply cannot be pleased and everything she does is never good enough. For someone that seemed to have so much influence over her, I was very surprised that he never made an appearance. It's hard to relate to her motivation or feel sorry for her when you never see how badly she's treated. The only other issue I have with the series is the price. I know that an author needs to make money, but all three novellas in the series currently cost a total of $6.97, which in my personal opinion is too much given the overall length of the story. If I didn't have access to Kindle Unlimited I probably would have avoided this series and I wonder how many other people are missing out on a good story just because of the price.

The conclusion - Beautiful but too short

After the ending of the previous book everything has fallen apart, Rachel realises she needs to be honest with Dylan before she settles into the life she's made for herself.
Life without Dylan has lost its colour and it's more a case of existing unless she's losing herself in music. The question is having tasted life and love can Rachel settle for less and what about Dylan is he ready to move on?
This is a beautiful read and a good conclusion to the story but, I know there's always a but, it felt rushed at the end, I wanted more even just a few more pages would have made a big difference.
I had to say I'm not a fan of what is essentially one book broken up into smaller sections but since all the sections were available and all on KU it didn't matter but I don't honestly think I would have read this otherwise.

Fitting end to a great series :)

Goes down as another off my 2016 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – The Third book in a series. So we finally find out what deal Rachel made to get into the symphony. Agreeing to marry the director Blaine. The look on Dylan’s face is just heartbreaking. After making a grand gesture of turning up at an event he knew she’d be bored at, leaving one of his own, you wouldn’t think anything could be so cruel.

Rachel is beyond torn. The moment she sees Dylan she is hit with the realisation that she is in love with him and then its like a train wreck happening in slow motion around her with what’s to come. She has made her bed and now she must lie in it, even if it kills her a little inside.

The thought that she has hurt Dylan makes her go after him after Blaine revealed their engagement. When they are face to face he demands answers to which she can only give part truths for. Dylan leaves in a cloud of hurt and anger and Rachel leaves with a broken soul. She knows she need to tell him the truth but doesn’t know where to start. Its not until she calls her friend Alex in broken tears that we find out she signed a contract forbidding her from speaking about the terms of it.

Love her friend Alex’s sharp tongue though when she starts laying into Blaine’s actions. He completely manipulated Rachel with getting her to agree to marry him and when you find out the other clauses you will want to punch him in the face for getting her to sign. Rachel tries to convince her friend that it’s as much her fault for signing, as it is his. At the time she would have done just about anything to get into the symphony. If for no other reason than just to make her good for nothing father happy – talk about daddy issues.

Rachel resolves to telling Dylan the truth, whether he wants to hear it or not, so goes out to his place in LA to confront him. Which she only found by stalking the net; her sleuth skills are improving. She is confronted though by a very angry Dylan, who does everything in his power to make her feel small and insignificant in his presence. Just as she is about to run out the door though he slams it shut pinning her between it and him. You can feel the sexual tension rushing off him towards her. He tried to force himself from her by leaving but they are like magnets – they will always have a pull towards each other.

Angry sex in book two was hot but holy hell this is so much hotter. He first off doesn’t care about the reason she is there; he just has to have her. After the hot angry sex though, which Rachel can’t decide if she likes more or not than their usually sexual antics, she tells him everything. He can’t believe she would think so little of herself to get roped into a situation like that. His first plan of action to help is to take her away from it all. Rachel is beyond tempted by his offer and if only he had told her he loved her then she would have. Instead it ends with them making love as part of a goodbye. Trying to memorise every last detail of each other before she goes back to the deal she made with the devil.

Which is the part where one bit of writing that stood out for me:

Nothing about this is sex. We’re making love. If our touches could talk, poetry would be filling the air. Mine and his. A thousand beautiful words live in his eyes, even if his lips are silent.

You are willing Dylan to step up and admit how he really feels and also for Rachel to figure out what she really wants. Dylan does tend to do romantic gestures with his music though. They both do in a way. They express themselves through their melodies and tell the other just what they are thinking and feeling when there lips stay quite. Rachel has a choice to make about how she wants her life to be. Regrets are something that both her and Dylan share and they have to overcome them if they want their true HEA.

The connection between Dylan and Rachel has been great throughout the whole series. A simple twist of fate changed their lives for the better. I am so glad that Rachel wanted to have a wild send off in Chicago because that ended up being the true start to the rest of her lust filled life with her badass rocker Dylan.

He totally enjoyed all of the information about each president

I purchased this for my eight year old grandson. He went on a trip to Mount Rushmore. He was so interested in the presidents. He totally enjoyed all of the information about each president. One of the tidbits of information was that President Jefferson is the one that wrote the recipe for ice cream. President Reagan saved 77 lives as a lifeguard and he was a movie star. He then went on to go into a talent show and sang all the presidents to the music of America the Beautiful. So I would recommend this book to everyone. Very educational and the kids learn a lot!!!

Definitely not worth the hype

I bought this book to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam because of recommendations that I read on [...]. The book is currently out of print, and many people will try to buy this book for exorbitantly high prices in some cases. It is not worth any more than cover price in my opinion. I admittedly have a solid background in Genetics from undergrad and research but I probably have the same background in Molecular Biology as every other US med student and I don't think I really learned anything from this book that I didn't already know, or at least anything I wouldn't have learned from UWorld and First Aid. If you struggle with these subjects, this book presents the concepts very clearly and concisely, but if you are not particularly weak in this area, I don't think this book is worth the extra money that it sometimes costs.

basics and details, lacking a middle ground, some integrated questions would be useful.

another important subject that's becoming more highly tested, unfortunately this book fails to find a good middle ground for covering the majority of the topics. a few subjects are effectively covered in this book; the lac operon, blotting techniques, some oncogene stuff, but overall, riddled with not-so-high yield info.

Very comprehensive little book. Great for referring to when the text or lecture notes get complicated. Not intended to replace other materials, but a nice enhancement for understanding.
