Hilarious

This book is amazing. The whole Rani Adventures series is amazing. As an MK myself I grew up with these books. We still talk about them in my family years later. The book gives wonderful descriptions as to what it is like growing up as an MK. What is really neat is that you will never meet an MK with the exact same story but all of them can relate their stories to one another somehow. It is a hilarious book full of stories that you can't even imagine. If you want to learn more about what it is like living overseas, or if you want to know more about MKs then read the whole series. I highly recommend it! Enjoy it to your heart's content!

A fantastic cultural insight

My daughter is 12 and both she and I LOVED it. She is hanging out for her birthday to get the next 2 instalments! For parents of younger readers, there is one sad moment describing the death of a young boy. It is very brief and in keeping with the story but my daughter and I needed to talk about it, so parents need to be alerted to that. But the story runs as one long amazing adventure and the rest is exciting and funny. Book 2, here we come!

Wonderful Book

This has been one of my favorite books since I was introduced to it in Middle School. It's the remarkable autobiography of an MK (Missionary's Kid) growing up in the jungles of South America. Ron Snell writes in such a way as to immerse you in the story. You'll laugh with him and his siblings most of the time, but there are spots where you'll cry.

When he wishes he could really see the Pteranodon pictured in one of them, it appears at the window. The children have been transported back to the Cretaceous period. They begin to explore and are soon threatened by a Tyrannosaurus. The Pteranodon comes to their rescue, and they figure out enough about the magic that carried them back in time to be able to use it to return home. There is plenty of suspense and magic here, and enough dinosaur information to please science buffs. Characterization is sketchy and older children will find the plot predictable, but readers just past the easy-to-read stage will find it satisfying. Perfect for my almost 2nd grader

I bought this book after a recommendation from a friend for my daughter who will be going into second grade after summer. I wanted to get some new books to keep her reading over the summer, but at the right reading level for her. This is the first chapter book she has read on her own (I sit with her but she does all the reading) and she can get 90% of the words no problem, 5% with some guidance and the other 5% I have to tell her. I think that perfect for her developing a better vocabulary while not being too challenging.
My only complaint is that the author writes with a ton of run-on sentences. Like this one. It's clearly to show the character's train-of-thought, but with sentence structure being so important at this age, my daughter was super confused at first.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend for a reader just getting into chapter books.

Great series for early readers.

My 7-year-old granddaughter reads at about a 3rd grade level. She loved this book. She looks forward to reading more about Jack & Annie's adventures. She did struggle to pronounce the dinosaur species names, but she is only 7. I'll definitely encourage her to stick with this series.
