Great book for the instance runners

I really like this series of books, they are well written and do a good job of explaining what is going to happen inside the instances (dungeons). They give little hints here and there that are a great help. On dungeons that require you stand in a certain spot they tell you where and give pictures. The loot tables are great help if you are looking for certain items. Good book and a great read. I always have it when I run through dungeons. Downside is as Warcraft is updated the book will not have current info and loot tables, so web sites will have the most current info but the boss battles still remain the same.

I ordered this from Games for Sale and received it Saturday- very fast! The maps are accurate with my Carbonite maps. My Guild put it to good use and we raided 4 Dungeons in 2 days w/o a lot of hangups. What I find extremely helpful is the info on where to get the Keys and what we need for the quest to make them. Also Boss lists! Who we have to get for the Achievement and where the Bosses are. Awesome! Very Helpful!

Our guild was preparing to start raids in Kara and we needed information on how to fight the bosses. None of us had ever been in there, except maybe to replace someone for a boss fight. This guide has helped our group get a complete clear. When someone suggests doing something else other than the guide it seems to fail most of the time. The successes we have had were when we followed the advice in the guide. This is a great guide for all of the instances with burning crusade including the heroic dungeons. A HUGE Help! I highly recommend.

Comprehensive Contemporary Theology

Ricoeur's work in the areas of hermeneutics and theology has been invaluable, and the essays contained in this book are particularly poignant and accessible. His work on Memory and Suffering alone make the book an excellent purchase, and every essay attests to the irreducible nature of God, Scripture, and Theology in a way few authors have done. An excellent work.

Narratival Hermeneutics

I am not going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of Figuring the Sacred. Not every chapter was equally good. Some of his musings on Heidegger and Kant were interesting but not germane to narrative theology.

"Philosophy and Religious Language"

"Understanding a text is always something more than the summation of partial meanings; the text as a whole has to be considered as a hierarchy of topics" (Ricoeur 38). This makes me think of chiasms. The structure of a chiasm reinforces meaning. Meaning unfolds from narrative.

"Not just any theology whatsoever can be tied to narrative form, but only a theology that proclaims Yahweh to be the grand actor of a history of deliverance. Without a doubt it is this point that forms the greatest contrast between the God of Israel and the God of Greek Philosophy" (40).

Manifestation and Proclamation

This is the most important essay in the book and the one that causes much offense. Ricoeur opposes a philosophy of manifestation (ontotheology) with a philosophy of proclamation (Yahweh speaks).

Manifestation

The "numinous" element of the sacred has nothing to do with language (49). Another key element is theophany--not moments in the biblical narrative, but anything by which the sacred shows itself (icons, relics, holy places). This means that reality is something other than itself while remaining itself.

There is a correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm (54). This brings to mind the Luciferian "as above, so below" dictum.

Proclamation

There is a rupture--violent in the case of the prophets' war against Baalism--between manifestation and proclamation. The word outweighs the numinous (56). Israel's whole theology--and identity--was formed around discourses.

Per idols and icons: "We may say that within the Hebraic domain they (hierophanies) withdraw to the extent that instruction through Torah overcomes any manifestation through an image. A Theology of the Name is opposed to any hierophany of an idol...Hearing the word has taken the place of vision of signs" (56). God's pesel is the Ten Words. It is the only pesel he commanded.

Communal Readings

In "The 'Sacred' Text and the Community" Ricoeur gives a neat deconstruction of the concept "sacred," especially when applied with a book.

For us, manifestation is not be necessity linked to language. The word 'sacred' belongs to the side of manifestation, not to the side of proclamation, because many things may be sacred without being a text (71)

Ricoeur the Hermeneut

His reading of Genesis 1:1-2:4a is interesting, but more for the method than the conclusions. His essay on the Imagination is quite valuable in showing what "goes on" in a narrative. Many narratives in the Bible, particularly Jesus's parables, employ intertextuality which always forces an expansion of meaning from the text. In other words, it is "an object with surplus value" (152). Assuming that the Holy Spirit didn't write chaotically and randomly, isolated texts are now seen in a pattern and signify something else, something more (161).

Ricoeur then moves to a section on biblical time, which is useful for meditation. He summarizes von Rad, Cullman, and others. I won't belabor the point.

His essay "Interpretive Narrative" offers his famous distinction between "idem" identity (the god of sameness, the god of Greek metaphysics) and ipse identity (the God who is constant to the Covenant). He expands this motif in "Naming God." God's identity is seen in his historic acts.

Conclusion

While magnificent, it is in many ways a difficult read. He assumes a familiarity with Continental Philosophy (itself a daunting task) and even then some essays don't seem to have a point. But when he unloads on narrative he truly delivers.

A philosophical reflection on religious understanding

This book is not an easy read. I found it tough sledding in some places. But it's well worth the effort for those who are willing to stick with it. Written by one of the leading philosophers of the 20th century, it uses both analytic and continental philosophy to plumb the depths of religious thought in an attempt to cast light on the connections between religious texts (the word) and spiritual experience (the sacred). At his best, Ricoeur is brilliant in ways that invite us to go deeper into our traditions and to connect our traditions with our personal experience.

This biography of business magnate Lewis is based on his unfinished autobiography; he died in 1993 at age 50 from brain cancer. Walker, who writes for the "Money" section of USA Today, completed the book after interviewing Lewis's family, friends, colleagues and employees. Lewis, growing up in an African American family in segregated Baltimore, attended parochial school, worked his way through college and Harvard Law and became a successful attorney and highly visible business executive, capping his career with the leveraged buyout of conglomerate Beatrice International Foods for $985 billion in 1987. His personal fortune was $400 million, we learn in this inspiring bio/business study, which deftly conveys Lewis's concerns not only about his work but also about his family, race and his own death. YA?Even as a small child, Lewis's goal was to become the richest black man in America. When he died of brain cancer at age 50 in 1993, he was worth over $400 million and was considered by Forbes magazine to be one of the 400 wealthiest Americans. Not only was he an extremely successful businessman, but he was also a caring philanthropist. His journey from middle-class Baltimore resident to international citizen makes for fascinating reading. He was in the process of writing his autobiography when he died, and Walker consulted many sources in order to give a full and accurate account of this intense, goal-oriented man's life. Lewis's words appear in italics; Walker's, in Roman typeface, provide additional information. Walker discusses his subject's private life, but he concentrates more on the business aspects. This is enough. From a humble birth in 1942 Lewis rose to become CEO of the billion-dollar company Beatrice in 1987. Journalist Walker, who never met Lewis, based this chronicle on dozens of interviews and on an unfinished autobiography Lewis wrote shortly before his death from brain cancer in 1993. As an African American, Lewis may have had a rocky trip to the top, but he didn't "dwell" on his race, as he is quoted as saying in his New York Times obituary. Reading this history, one comes away with a renewed appreciation of the opportunities still available in the United States to those who work hard and long. Long hours alone do not explain Lewis's success, of course. Also important were his determination, tenacity, intelligence, and education-the story of how he got into Harvard Law School is fascinating. One need not understand leveraged buyouts to enjoy this well-written biography. Recommended for public libraries.

First off Im not sure what the negative reviews about biases were all about , but for me this book meant a lot . He showed me that with your business endeavors ; wealth is a team sport . Credibility is the guerrilla glue that holds them team together . I'm going to work hard to establish credibility so a team can be built on it . Reginald thank you for the life you lived . I saw myself in you so many times . The only thing I swayed from was the importance of Race , but nevertheless you gave me another perspective on the matter . I hope with every fiber in my bone , and strategy in my action our race can have a new leaf of consciousness turned .

One of the greatness

This book was exceptional and that was an understatement. In my opinion Reg was one of the best business people in the world. It's unfair to call him the best black business man, but was the best period. Without a doubt in my mind he would have controlled other great big brand companies like a movie studio, professional sports team, car dealer ship or anything else. Simply the man was astonishing and the book left me in tears and deserves a full biopic. As an aspiring entrepreneur this book will be one of the best I ever read on an entrepreneur if not the best. May God bless you Reg and that you are in Abraham's bosom. Also great work by Blair Walker as well.

Couldn't put it down!

An awesome read. I knew the story of Mr. Lewis fairly well yet once I started reading this book I was transfixed. It captivated me as a book rarely does. Although this book would be very pertinent for African-Americans, I am a white Canadian and I found this story to be absolutely inspirational, transcending any race or citizenship. It is about a person that always had a very strong belief in himself and stayed true to his vision, regardless of what seemed realistic to others. The focus and drive he possessed is incredible. What others would have viewed as failure he saw as a way to judge his performance and improve. The complexity of the deals he pulled off and the way he ran the companies to record profits shows the genius of this legend in corporate American history.

This should be made into a blockbuster Hollywood movie starring Jamie Fox as Reginald F. Lewis. Seriously,this story is 100 times more interesting than the Facebook story and look what they did with that! C'mon Spielberg, get on it.

Was this book even edited? I paid much more than the $19.XX this book is currently selling for and was quite disappointed.

There are a lot of good info-graphics and charts, however reading around the lack of editing has been difficult.
Is there a reason this wasn't edited? And if so, why does books by this author cost so much?

I bought this and a second title from this author as textbooks for a class and now refuse to purchase any other titles by this author, as I am leery that they may all be edited this way.
