Great Reference book

Not sure if I would have suggested to use this book with a college course, but I consider it an invaluable resource book; especially since I am starting my own business.

Updated classic

This book provides an exceptionally comprehensive treatment of managing for quality in the context of an overall enterprise (take a look at the table of contents). It is a great introductory text to the basic concepts of quality management that underly various continuous improvement initiatives of recent years (e.g., Lean Six Sigma), with lots of real-life examples to help illustrate important tools and methods. Additionally, it is a practical reference for more detailed topics such as statistical data analysis, hypothesis testing, and DOE. This is a new edition (the prior edition was published in 2001), and has some new features that help facilitate its use as a course textbook, including Minitab� problem sets, instructor's manual, and web links. Unlike some technical texts, it does a good job in treating topics in bite-sized sections that don't leave the reader exhausted. I'd recommend this book to anyone that practices quality management, may be involved in quality improvement initiatives, or is in operations or engineering disciplines.

ATK--My "Go To" Line of Cookbooks!

Another keeper! I LOVE the New England Bar Pizza!! I also really like the Sicilian Pizza (sauce). I am working my way through this cookbook. I'm going to make the Raspberry Charlotte tomorrow for my niece's birthday. These recipes are usually a little more time-consuming than some others, but usually totally worth it if you have the time. I have a fairly stocked up pantry, so I normally have the ingredients on hand, but sometimes I have to make a shopping list. I have never had a recipe "fail" from this source. Sometimes it wasn't something I loved, but that was just a matter of taste. Since I work full-time, I would like to see another "quickie" recipe book. I really love any of the cookbooks ATK puts out. They have made my inner "Mrs. Patmore" come to life. I love just browsing through these cookbooks at night and my late aunt, who also loved to cook, did the same thing--she just loved this line of cookbooks. Anyhow, good job and thanks ATK!

Melissa Pearl was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but has spent much of her life abroad, living in countries such as Jordan, Cyprus and Pakistan... not to mention a nine month road trip around North America with her husband. Excellent Climax to a great trilogy!!!

There are no disillusions in this last book of the series. It is exciting from start to finish as the characters grow in strength and are also beset by complications that stretch loyalties as the truth unfolds. We feel for these young people and their moral dilemma, and for Gabe who has to watch knowing what can happen. There are no spoilers here, there is no need to know more about the action than that the book has a very satisfying ending and that this is definately an author to watch and follow. An excellent finish to what has been a excellent series.

AN UNFORGETTABLE READ!!

Gemma and Harrison enter their final school year with the ever increasing possibility that Gemma's parents will discover that Harrison does not only still exist but is also still having a very serious relationship with Gemma. Gemma and Harrison must also find out why Harrison's mother has suddenly turned on Gemma and when they do, Gemma must find a way to turn the situation around. When the exchange student, Simeon, arrives to lodge with Gemma and her family, things are bound to get extremely difficult for her and Harrison.

I was touched by the gentleness and purity of the romantic relationship between Harrison and Gemma, but, can such a lovely relationship outlast the antagonism of Gemma's so-called parents? When multiple lives seem poised on the edge of ruin and an innocent dies, will Gemma be able to make the ultimate sacrifice?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series, I simply could not put this one down. Apart from the nonstop suspense, this book took me on an emotional roller coaster ride. I went from shouting encouragement and sitting on the edge of my chair with anticipation, to grabbing handfuls of Kleenex. Romance, suspense and truly tear-jerking moments; this book has it all. The brilliantly portrayed characters and the regular dates, given to keep the reader on track, brings a unique realism to the story; something which is very handy in a time travel novel. With never a dull moment in the story, the author kept me guessing right up to the end.

Once again I want to advise readers to get hold of "Golden Blood" and "Black Blood" - the first two books in this trilogy - before reading "Pure Blood". As this is the last book in the Time Spirit Trilogy, I was sad to say good bye to all these characters. "Pure Blood" is more than deserving of 5 stars and I sincerely hope that Melissa Pearl will soon have some more wonderful books for us book-hungry readers to look forward to. (Ellen Fritz)

In the first book, Gemma and Harrison fell in love, which greatly angered Gemma's parents. In the second bok, Gemma furthers her abilities as a time spirit, with help from Gabe, her real father. Now, after thwarting her parents' plans to write Harrison out of existance, Gemma must keep her love for Harrison a secret, and maybe save the world along the way.

While the first two books in the series had enough action to keep me interested, this one was a non-stop thrill ride. The suspense builds up quite nicely, which led me to read the entire book in one siting.

All in all, this is the best book in the series. Keep in mind, however; even though you may have predicted how the series ends, the way it is written will leave you satisfied.

The best book on the subject I have come across

I've found Stefan Linder's book the most educative and enjoyable reading. I especially like the many illustrations visualizing the in reality quite complicated physical phenomena. They greatly help in grasping the ideas under discussion. The text is logical, precise and clear, showing throughout how the writer really has his own, true understanding of the subject and how he aims to help the reader to attain this understanding too. This book was exactly what I was looking for and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any Technical University student or engineer occupied with power components. It is by far the best book on the subject I have come across.

A very good read

The book is so simple to understand, that a person who really wants to reset their life, can follow the simple instructions in the book with ease. But make sure before each time you read, whether 1 chapter or several at a time, pray first, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you on what you are reading. Best of all, it is backed up by the word of God, and who will doubt the Word? A good read not just once, but several times when you feel the need to "Reset".

About the Author
Joseph Heller was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a bombardier in the Second World War and then attended New York University, Columbia and Oxford University, the last on a Fullbright scholarship. He taught for two years at Pennsylvania State University, before returning to New York, where he began a successful career in the advertising departments of Time, Look and McCall's magazines. It was during this time that he had the idea for Catch-22. Working on the novel in spare moments and evenings at home, it took him eight years to complete and was first published in 1961. His second novel, Something Happened was published in 1974, Good As Gold in 1979 and Closing Time in 1994. He is also the author of the play 'We Bombed in New Haven'. Joseph Heller died in 1999.

An existentialist Masterpiece

The title of this book by Joseph Heller is "Something Happened." Another title could have been "Life: The Book." This is one of the very, very few books I know that accurately and realistically portrays real life - life as it actually is - warts and all. The book I read immediately before this one was James Joyce's much-touted masterwork, Ulysses. Now, that book can, and has been, described the same way by many, and it is, in many ways, the very last word on realism. That said, it has much in common with this book, and Something Happened is, in many ways, the better book. Classicists and romanticists may well prefer Joyce's novel and consider it downright blasphemy to have it compared with this modern masterwork, but the fact is, this is a very good and much underrated book, and will probably be preferred by post-modernists and existentialists over Ulysses. The book is very long - nearly 600 pages - and does have a tendency to ramble at times - often seemingly without a point. It's written in the style of a first-person narrative, and this is one of the few books where you truly get into the head of the main character. That is the main difference between this book and Ulysses: unlike the latter work, which follows the adventures of three separate characters as they follow parallel courses and sometimes intertwine, Something Happened consists entirely of one character's thoughts and actions. And, since it deals only with other people insofar as they relate to him, it can get a bit solipsistic at times - however, that said, Heller's intention with this book (I think) was to accurately and realistically describe the thoughts in the head of a fairly normal, everyday American male. He does a rather remarkable job of this. The only real criticism of the book I can make is that it does tend to repeat itself quite a lot at times: certain situations are mentioned again and again with little or no variation, often seemingly for no reason - but, as anyone knows, this is, indeed, how most people's minds do work. The main character, Bob Slocum, is not a perfect person - but he is a REAL person. This is not another cardboard cutout character that we see all too many of: this is a real living, breathing flesh and blood character, warts and all - HUMAN, just like us. Many of the situations he finds himself in - both in the workplace and domestically - as well as the thoughts and emotions he finds himself experiencing, will no doubt hit home with a great many readers. Although Heller more than likely constructed Slocum to portray a certain generation of people - the anguished, confused veterans of the war - he is applicable to the Average Joe: he's the true Everyman. Heller seeks, in this book, to answer the real question: What, just what, DID happen, to that great, blinding glow of post-war euphoria? Or, as Roger Waters put it, "Whatever happened to the post-war dream?" Where's the American Dream? Where's all the sun and rainbows? WHAT HAPPENED? Something did.
I highly reccommend this book. It is a masterpiece, and criminally underrated. It's a shame that Heller's reputation rests almost solely upon Catch-22, when he has so many other notable and distinct works, such as this one. As another reviewer pointed out, I believe this book was overlooked by Modern Library when they made their list of the Top 100 Books of the 20th Century: it truly belongs on it. Don't make the mistake of overlooking it.

Excellent characterization, but often slow-going

I suppose the first thing that one should know before reading this book is that the title is a bit of a misnomer. I spent the entire 569 pages of this book waiting for something to, in fact, happen, but nothing does until the very end (and when it does the book pretty much comes to a screeching, unapologetic halt then and there).

If you can get past that, you'll do fine with this book. It is written entirely in stream-of-conciousness, from the point of view of Bob Slocum's confused and lonely mind. Truly the best thing about this book is the characterization of Bob himself; his sheer humanity is such that the more you get to know him, the harder it gets to be sure whether you should sympathize with him or depise him. It is often easy to do both simulataneously. This book takes you into the darkest corners of the mind of someone who on the surface would seem to be an average guy, and really makes you think about yourself and other people you know, the kinds of secret thoughts that everyone has and that everyone is ashamed to have.

Most of the book focuses on Bob's relationship with his family; his unnamed wife, son, and daughter and his brain-damaged son Derek. There are some very poignant moments here, although it does tend to stagnate in places where he simply reiterates the same point over and over again. He also has a tendency to jump back to certain specific details of his past for seemingly no reason at all and retell the same bits multiple times, and in sets of parantheses which often last for pages. We are, however, rewarded for our patience with these flaws whenever Bob tells us of his work life, for it is here that we get a taste of the wry humor and snappy dialogue that made Catch-22 such a joy to read.

I gave this book three stars because I did enjoy it, but it truly was difficult to get through at times. There is a lot to like here, but there is also a lot to get frustrated about, and there are moments when the bad outweighs the good. Still, any fan of Heller should add this to their collection - just be sure to read Catch-22 first.

A hard but rewarding read

A warning to all readers: This is a hard novel. It has none of Catch-22's hilarious, irresistably warm characters and there is no actual plot to speak of. It consists almost entirely of the main character's thoughts, on his past, his work and his family.
This book is certainly not pretty. Bob slocum is sexist, racist, homophobic, a womaniser and a bully, as are most of the people who inhabit his world. But he is more real than you can ever imagine.
Despite my criticisms, Something Happened is undoubtedly a work of Genius. Heller shatters the American Dream. It is a larger than life portrayal of the same world Holden Caulfield (of The Catcher in the Rye) is so dissillusioned with.
While you might at times get frustrated with the book's repetition and seeming lack of direction, stick it out - it's definitely worth it. You'll be rewarded with a true and moving insight into the darker side of modern society (even truer now, 40 years on).
Despite attempting a far sadder novel here, than with Catch-22, Heller certainly hasn't lost any of his wit. A hard but ultimately rewarding read, definitely worth a look.

About the Author

Ginny Wacker Guido has been active in legal and ethical issues in nursing for the past 30 years. She developed an interest in this area of nursing when teaching undergraduate nursing students in Houston, Texas, and this excitement for further knowledge and understanding of this content area encouraged her to pursue a doctor of jurisprudence degree. Over the years, she has attended multiple workshops and conferences, updating and expanding her knowledge base regarding both the legal and ethical aspects of nursing practice. Dr Guido also continues to publish and present on legal and ethical issues with special emphasis in a variety of clinical practice settings. She remains active in nursing education and is currently employed as the Regional Director for Nursing and Assistant Dean, College of Nursing, Washington State University Vancouver.�

Good book missing pages needed for assignment

This is being used as a textbook for a graduate class. It is written on an interesting manner with lots of case studies.

Now that I am at the end of the course, I see the last 2 chapters are missing. Others complained chapter 3 was missing, which I have, but chapters 21 & 22 are missing. I bought 2 versions, the 2014 and the 2010 both have the same missing chapters. i need these chapters to complete my assignment.
