About the Author
Frank was born and bred in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, in 1945. Born into a family of mill workers, he spent much of his free time on the Yorkshire Moors feeding his fascination with wildlife and nature. He later went on to lecture at the BICC. In 1995 he immigrated to the USA and now lives in peace on the shores of Lake Erie, Ohio, with his wife, two dogs, a colony of honeybees, and a menagerie of other critters. Easy to Follow Instructions and Great for Beginners

The author of this manual follows the KISS principle: keep it simple, stupid! I found this book to be well-written with great examples, short, sweet, and to the point. If you've ever considered raising your own mushrooms, Frank Randall delivers with specific examples. He tells you the positive and negative of his experiences of growing different varieties of mushrooms, as well as what to try as a beginner and what varieties to wait on growing until you have more experience (but with tips on how to grow the harder ones).

I have started my first batch using this guide - wish me luck! I picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion and, as I write this review, I see the pricing is now at $2.99 - money well-spent.

Is amazon now publishing books? There is no reason this should be published in any form beyond a pamphlet or perhaps the instructions a company might include with a mushroom kit. It was nearly content free. On the two occasions that Randall actually seemed to be getting close to conveying new information, he wuickly stopped and referred the reader to a real book. Very disappointing.

A book for no one!

I have never given a One Star rating before, ON ANYTHING!! This is a pamphlet, and a bad one at that. It has no actual information in it. It's just an advertising piece for the sales companies in the back. No actual instructions, just fluff about how much fun you can have growing mushrooms, and puts the popular ones in order as to which is the easiest and which is the toughest to grow. SADLY only worth the BTU's of heat I can get from it in my fireplace!

He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and won the Wilcoxon prize. He is Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association-Theory and Methods and former Editor of the Electronic Journal of Statistics and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics's Lecture Notes―Monographs. Professor Ruppert has published over 125 scientific papers and four books: Transformation and Weighting in Regression, Measurement Error in Nonlinear Models, Semiparametric Regression, and Statistics and Finance: An Introduction.

David S. Matteson is Assistant Professor of Statistical Science at Cornell University, where he is a member of the ILR School, Center for Applied Mathematics, Field of Operations Research, and the Program in Financial Engineering, and teaches statistics and financial engineering. Professor Matteson received his PhD in Statistics at the University of Chicago. He received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and won Best Academic Paper Awards from the annual R/Finance conference. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association-Theory and Methods, Biometrics, and Statistica Sinica. He is also an Officer for the Business and Economic Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association, and a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Biometric Society.

David Ruppert is Andrew Schultz, Jr., Professor of Engineering and Professor of Statistical Science, School of Operations Research and Information Engineering and Department of Statistical Science, Cornell University, where he teaches statistics and financial engineering and is a member of the Program in Financial Engineering. His research areas include asymptotic theory, semiparametric regression, functional data analysis, biostatistics, model calibration, measurement error and astrostatistics. Professor Matteson received his PhD in Statistics at the University of Chicago and his BS in Finance, Mathematics, and Statistics at the University of Minnesota. He received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and won Best Academic Paper Awards from the annual R/Finance conference. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association-Theory and Methods, Biometrics, and Statistica Sinica. He is also an Officer for the Business and Economic Statistics Section of American Statistical Association, and a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Biometric Society.

it seems like the author purposefully obfuscates the material because his explanations ...

The book includes concepts that are tremendously valuable, but the author is unable to explain these concepts in a lucid manner. Approximately 40% of the book is written in mathematical notation and the author rarely takes the time to define the notation that he uses. At times, it seems like the author purposefully obfuscates the material because his explanations on simple financial concepts are laboriously dense. The author cannot describe simple concepts such as the natural log, or normal distributions in a lucid manner. In regard to more difficult concepts, the reader will be spending ample time at Khan Academy and on the web attempting to deduce the notation and concepts. This book is only useful for mathematicians that have a biblical grasp on mathematical notation.

About the Author
Mark Allan Powell (PhD, Union Theological Seminary, Richmond) is the Robert and Phyllis Leatherman Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He is the general editor of the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary as well as the author of numerous articles and books. Powell has also served as the chair of the SBL Historical Jesus Section and is the former New Testament editor of the SBL Academia Biblica dissertation series.

used for graduate study in theology

We used this book as a supplement to a graduate level NT class. Powell does a wonderful job of presenting both conservative and liberal points of view on issues in the NT, without his own prejudices creeping in. His information is well-researched and accurate. Each chapter gives a quick overview of a NT book, background/history of the author and time, and presents the major themes found in the NT book. Powell's writing style is fluid and approachable, which makes the book a joy to read (yes... even for a 'textbook'). Readers of all backgrounds and education levels will get much from this read. Highly recommend.

Great for veterans and newcomers

We are using this book in a bible study at our church. It has been an excellent resource both for the veterans of many years of bible study and for those just beginning. Each chapter is a complete treatment of its subject without being overwhelming. The artwork (ranging from the Great Masters to He Qi) is gorgeous. The supplemental materials both in the text and on the website for the text are so helpful in teaching and are available as (pdf) handouts for those who want more in-depth information. As a teacher I love it, and my students have all prized it as a great companion to reading the New Testament.

Excellent Textbook for Study of New Testament

Dr. Mark Allan Powell has produced an excellent textbook for undergraduate college courses or in our case, for an 8-month, adult, once-a-week forum with our pastor that is about an hour and fifteen minutes long. The chapter lengths are about right. We read one chapter a week and read the Bible passages that go with the chapter before class. Dr. Powell's voice is very much in evidence, so that you have the feeling you are in the classroom with him as you read the book. He takes a fascinating approach to the subject of the New Testament, giving various theories and approaches. Dr. Powell is professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio and co-author of Opening the Book of Faith: Lutheran Insights for Bible Study (Augsburg Fortress, 2008) and several articles. He has a real sense of humor which helps you remember various aspects of the New Testament.
