Accessible and Insightful! Made me think about music differently

Turino explores various facets of music and our relationship with it. I read this book in a Freshman-level Ethno-musicology class and was inspired to continue reading and studying in that field, but the book stands just as easily on its own as a thought-provoking look at the way music can shape the way we think, live, and relate to one another.

Useful book for anyone to read

I was a little hesitant when I was assigned this book for my Music of the World course, but I was really satisfied with it. Turino provides some really great tools for thinking about music's function in the world, why we love it so much, and how it is experienced in different cultures. Some explanations are a little extensive, but Turino makes some really good points that have changed the way I perceive music and the potential music has to affect our daily lives.
He also brings all of his small, specific points together and makes broader conclusions and applications about the larger implications of these points, and makes it really relevant to our lives. The book wasnt solely about music; he often strayed away from music and talked about other social processes and change, so don't worry if you're not particularly interested in music. That being said, if you are interested in music, the other pieces are important for everyone to consider, so dont despair.
Also, the accompanying CD was great; it was really useful to have musical examples to refer to! It included some really cool tracks from several countries and made it a lot easier to really understand what he was talking about.

It gave me a few ways to deal with those odd get together or awkward family gathers. I read one review and it mention if you are an introvert this is a book for you to read and you will be much more prepared for like the office party. The book will give you tools in a way to deal with all the different conversation you may encounter. No one would be able to guess you are an introvert. It is an easy read.

This is an awesome book. If you're introverted, this book is a definite must read. It's not a book filled with fluff but rather the different strategies you might need to employ when it comes to making small talk. Patrick goes into detail about the different ways you might use conversation from making friends, hitting on girls, and my favorite - defending yourself against people who might try to railroad you in a conversation.

Awesome Book!

This book is AWESOME!!! It's like cherry chunga! (Watch the 1 episode with Cherry Jubilee.) I'm doing to give you a SPOILER!!! BUT HERE IS THE WARNING TO THE SPOILER!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! ALERT!!! ALERT!!!

SPOILER- Princess Cadence is telling the story about how her and Shining Armor got together that led to the Royal Pony Wedding. There's this big bully named Buck Withers. Twilight and Cadence make charts to see if her and Shining Armor will have a happy ending. Cadence isn't big with Buck but he feels the exact opposite. If you're wondering what makes Buck Withers a bully, here it is, he shoves ponies in lockers, calls ponies dorks, stole lunch money though foal school, etc. Every mare likes Buck except for Candence because she likes Shining Armor. At the big fall formal (closely related to EG) Buck takes Candence to the dance (two other ponies aren't liking Buck either. NO SPOILERS!!!). But I won't say any more or you won't want to read it because I told you everything. Or so you think!

NOT A SPOILER ANYMORE-I didn't tell you any of the funny parts! So get this book because you will love the funny parts! There's also a bonus in there! SO GET THIS BOOK!!! You will love this book!

2 Stars - Didn't Do It for Me

Although still new to the paranormal romance genre, I've always been in love with vampire-related stories. This book, although was not a bad read did not do it for me.

First of all, the character development is quite weak. Neither Rhys nor Jane has anything that is particularly special about their character. And because of this, it gets very difficult to see why they have fallen for each other so "deeply," as the story suggests. And it is also difficult to see how "deep" their love was for each other, as there really are no significant events in the story to show it to the reader, other than when Christian, Rhy's brother, attacks Jane.

In addition, the storyline is quite weak. Ms. Love was not able to build enough suspense for the climax of the story. There were many times throughout the book when I thought, "ok, something should be happening," but then nothing does. And the 2 love birds just went about doing the deed again and again. So when Christian finally makes his move, I was already yawning.

In short, this book is weak on both character and plot development. It wouldn't keep me turning the pages. What it did kept me doing was looking at how many pages are left in the book, and thinking of which book to read next.

2 stars for this book for that it wasn't so bad that I had to put it down, and because I am still somewhat interested in the two other brothers' stories. Although, those books has just been moved to my low priority list.

Excellent! Excellent!

Kathy Love immediately drew me in with the intriguing characters of Rhys and Jane (what brought them to the bar in the first place). Then, why was Rhys' brother, Christian, so miffed with him that he wanted to kill him? Nothing gets told right away (exactly what happened with Rhys and the woman Christian thought he loved?), but just enough to keep me interested. The characters had depth and were actually believable (vampires, believable?) -- and likable. Rhys' other brother, Sebastian, was hilarious with all the stunts he pulled on the amnesiac Rhys (a vampire with amnesia who forgets he's a vampire?).

The love scenes were mesmerizing. I've read several romances and the love scenes got to the point where they were tedious; I thought I'd become jaded. Kathy Love's love scenes were highly original and I read with bated breath. When I thought she couldn't possibly throw in another love scenario, she did. Personally, I like the bathtub scene the best.

A great book to read when you have enough time set aside. Don't expect to be able to easily set it aside and get back to it. I made the mistake of starting to read this book at night. I had a hard time putting it down as it's such a page-turner. Needless to say, I lost a lot of sleep.

This was the best vampire romance book I've read so far as it had wonderful characters, plot and suspense. I will definitely be purchasing more of Kathy Love's books.

It was definitely erotic but where were the vamps???

At first I kind of felt cheated by this book. With the title and the cute cover I was thinking this would be a light hearted, maybe even funny vampire romance novel. Not so much. I hope it's not only me but this didn't feel very "vampirey" at all. It felt like an erotic romance novel that fell short on the storyline and character development. The heroine Jane (if you can go as far as to call her that!) was completely underdeveloped and there wasn't much about her to like! All we really know is that she had a rough childhood. Ok. Her and Rhys certainly fell fast and hard for eachother but... why? There was nothing that made me feel why they had to have each other so badly. Jane says she's in love with Rhys but all the 2 did was have a bunch of sex (very well written sex!) so really she's in lust? What? IDK. If you want a sexy, fluffy book with not much background or story then pick this one up.

This book was a very bizarre collection of poems. It was used in one of my college literature classes. I was not a fan, but others enjoyed the book. Her poems feel "quilted" as many subject and ideas are brought together. I was unable to follow the train of thought, but that doesn't mean others won't be able to.

Browse the pictures, skip the text

In "Contemporary Landscape Photography", Heilman tries to cover *a lot* of material, with a wide range of topics including equipment, exposure, composition, field work, and post processing (among others). Sadly, it misses the mark on basically all of these. As a book which is clearly meant for beginning and novice photographers, this book does such a poor job at explaining many fundamental concepts that it would do more to confuse that audience than educate.

First the positives. The print quality of this book is quite good, and the images are almost all excellent. If you like landscape photography, you'll find some inspiring pictures within. The images in this book are by far the best thing inside. Sadly, beyond that, I didn't find much to like about this book.

The opening chapter, "Equipment & Techniques", suffers from a problem I've seen in other beginner photography books: forward referencing (i.e. where jargon is used before it is defined; and sometimes it's not defined at all). A good novice photography book needs to establish fundamental concepts first, and only then discuss topics that build on it. This book doesn't do that.

I'm always bewildered when I read books like this one that start out talking about equipment (including features like high ISO noise reduction; metering modes; histograms; etc), before even describing what the photographic triangle is. If you're a beginner, what good does it do you to read about how different cameras have exposure compensation features in 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments, when you haven't even read anything about what a stop of light even is? The overall content on equipment was mediocre at best (perhaps it's best described as an "overview"). Don't expect to learn much here. The basics are described, but with less detail than you'd find in many other books.

Later on, this book tries cover the exposure triangle, but I have never read such a horrible description of this. A firm understanding of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is absolutely critical in photography. Many books are dedicated entirely to this important topic, and this book doesn't come close to explaining the topic adequately. The descriptions are very terse, there aren't enough examples, and the material is disorganized (in fact in some cases it's actually useless). There is an entire page dedicated to an EV chart that nobody is ever going to use, and adds nothing to the explanation of photographic exposure. Heilman starts doing reciprocity calculations talking about equivalent exposures before even explaining what's going on. How is a beginner going to know f/22 is 3 stops away from f/8 or why that matters?

Another example of a poor explanation in this book is the description on metering modes. The whole topic of 18% reflectance is just butchered. Instead of just saying that light meters consider everything as a middle "gray" tonal value (and hence the need to compensate when your scene is really darker or lighter than this), there's some very confusing text saying sky/trees/grass are 18% gray, and things "average out" to gray in such a scene, but in other scenes get over or under-exposed. The text makes it sounds like the author just "knows" what the reflectance value of things in the photograph are (and you should too), rather than understanding how a meter works. There's also some inaccuracies in the text (albeit usually inconsequential, like calling the shape of a histogram a "bell curve", when few histograms will actually exhibit that shape).

Here's another bad example of explanations. There's a topic about "flash and artificial light" and it basically talks about light painting without describing exactly what it is or how it's done. It goes only as far as saying you use artificial light, like flashlights, but doesn't describe what's really going on. This topic also just pulls out the term "flash compensation", and of course, there's nowhere that's described (and why that's different than ambient light exposure). If you've never heard of this term, you'd be left scratching your head.

The next section of this book is what you might consider the "artistic" part of the book. There is some very vague and poorly described topics on composition, some rhetoric about learning from masters and finding a "style", and some generally unhelpful text about lighting and weather. There are also some topics on creative techniques like long exposures, panning, and depth of field, etc. Like just about every other topic in this book, each idea is only a page or two long with really shallow descriptions that fall well short of being useful in practice. Take a topic like "Evoking Emotion" on page 76. There's so much that can be said about this. Use of tones, colour, and textures can be used effectively to convey a mood, but how and why these work is basically only given a sentence or two of treatment. Half the text is about "being in touch with your emotions", but that's not going to translate to good photographs by itself.

Chapter 3 is entitled "On location", and this might better be described as "filler material". Here you'll find dozens of short 1 or 2 page sections on an array of different shooting conditions/subjects like sunrise/sunset, clouds, the moon, weather, etc. Most of the text is extremely generic and repetitive, and almost entirely void of useful content. I'll give you an example of what to expect. On page 136, the topic is "Majestic Mountains". There are 4 paragraphs that basically can be summed up as saying "I hike a lot, and landscapes are beautiful. Every mountain is unique, and it changes with the seasons and weather. Try different focal lengths and shoot from different perspectives." There appeared to be no real purpose to this part of the book.

The last section is on post-processing. Like the section on equipment, this section also fails to be instructive. Basically, if you don't already know how to use Photoshop, you're probably going to be lost with the descriptions of how layers are used for various operations; if you do know how to use Photoshop, you'll learn nothing new.

Overall, I'd say that although there's a lot of different topics covered in this book, it's obvious that none of these topics is given the treatment they deserve. If you're a novice, I highly suggest you skip this book, and get dedicated books to teach you about technical fundamentals, composition, and post-processing instead. There are plenty to choose from, and you'll learn far more, and have way fewer gaps in your understanding than if you tried to take it all in by reading this book. Not recommended.

Digital Landscape Must Have

I purchased this book a little over a month ago and it has become my favorite technical read. I've been taking landscape SLR pictures since the 60's but only switched to digital photography a few years ago. This book has truly opened my eyes to the marvels of this new technology. The over view of Post-Processing techniques is a great summary of what can be done with the data the camera collects. The heart of this book is truly "professional techniques" for landscape photography that can benefit anyone, even point and shoot owners. My only caution here is you'll really want a DSLR after getting this book. I am lucky to live in upstate New York only a few miles from the southern boundry of the Adirondacks so I have the opportunity to visit the same sites as the author. Bottom line: great, easy read with something for everyone.

About the Author
Peter Hawkes graduated from the University of Cambridge and subsequently obtained his PhD in the Electron Microscopy Section of the Cavendish Laboratory. He remained there for several years, working on electron optics and digital image processing before taking up a research position in the CNRS Laboratory of Electron Optics (now CEMES-CNRS) in Toulouse, of which he was Director in 1987. During the Cambridge years, he was a Research Fellow of Peterhouse and a Senior Research fellow of Churchill College. He has published extensively, both books and scientific journal articles, and is a member of the editorial boards of Ultramicroscopy and the Journal of Microscopy. He was the founder-president of the European Microscopy Society, CNRS Silver Medallist in 1983 and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and of the Microscopy Society of America (Distinguished Scientist, Physics, 2015), Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and Honorary Member of the French Microscopy Society. In 1982, he was awarded the ScD degree by the University of Cambridge.
In 1982, he took over editorship of the Advances in Electronics & Electron Physics (now Advances in Imaging & Electron Physics) from Claire Marton (widow of the first editor, Bill Marton) and followed Marton's example in maintaining a wide range of subject matter. He added mathematical morphology to the topics regularly covered; Jean Serra and Gerhard Ritter are among those who have contributed.
In 1980, he joined Professor Wollnik (Giessen University) and Karl Brown (SLAC) in organising the first international conference on charged-particle optics, designed to bring together opticians from the worlds of electron optics, accelerator optics and spectrometer optics. This was so successful that similar meetings have been held at four-year intervals from 1986 to the present day. Peter Hawkes organised the 1990 meeting in Toulouse and has been a member of the organising committee of all the meetings. He has also participated in the organization of other microscopy-related congresses, notably EMAG in the UK and some of the European and International congresses on (electron) microscopy.
He is very interested in the history of optics and microscopy, and recently wrote long historical articles on the correction of electron lens aberrations, the first based on a lecture delivered at a meeting of the Royal Society. He likewise sponsored biographical articles for the Advances on such major figures as Ernst Ruska (Nobel Prize 1986), Helmut Ruska, Bodo von Borries, Jan Le Poole and Dennis Gabor (Nobel Prize, 1971). Two substantial volumes of the series were devoted to 'The Beginnings of Electron Microscopy' and 'The Growth of Electron Microscopy'. and others have covered 'Cold Field Emission Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy' and 'Aberration-corrected Electron Microscopy', with contributions by all the main personalities of the subject.

Good book, weak Kindle edition

The book is very useful, but the Kindle Edition I bought is problematic, because the equations are small and will not rescale or zoom, either on my Windows PC version of Kindle software, or on my Android Kindle software. A friend who got the book in PDF format of course does not have this problem.
