Finally, a compendium of the most rigorous research (gamblers ruin based) on risky decisions

There are two methods to consider in a risky strategy.

1) The first is to know all parameters about the future and engage in optimized portfolio construction, a lunacy unless one has a god-like knowledge of the future. Let us call it Markowitz-style. In order to implement a full Markowitz- style optimization, one needs to know the entire joint probability distribution of all assets for the entire future, plus the exact utility function for wealth at all future times. And without errors! (I have shown that estimation errors make the system explode.)

2) Kelly's method (or, rather, Kelly-Thorpe), developed around the same period, which requires no joint distribution or utility function. It is very robust. In practice one needs to estimate the ratio of expected profit to worst- case return-- dynamically adjusted to avoid ruin. In the case of barbell transformations, the worst case is guaranteed (leave 80% or so of your money in reserves). And model error is much, much milder under Kelly criterion. So, assuming one has the edge (as a sole central piece of information), engage in a dynamic strategy of variable betting, getting more conservative after losses ("cut your losses") and more aggressive "with the house's money". The entire focus is the avoidance of gambler's ruin.

The first strategy was only embraced by academic financial economists --empty suits without skin in the game -- because you can make an academic career writing BS papers with method 1 much better than with method 2. On the other hand EVERY SURVIVING speculator uses explicitly or implicitly method 2 (evidence: Ray Dalio, Paul Tudor Jones, Renaissance, even Goldman Sachs!) For the first method, think of LTCM and the banking failure.

Let me repeat. Method 2 is much, much, much more scientific in the true sense of the word, that is rigorous and applicable. Method 1 is good for "job market papers" . Now this book presents all the major papers for the second line of thinking. It is almost exhaustive; many great thinkers in Information theory and probability (Ed Thorpe, Leo Breiman, T M Cover, Bill Ziemba) are represented... even the original paper by Bernouilli.

Buy 2 copies, just in case you lose one. This book has more meat than any other book in decision theory, economics, finance, etc...

I have not read this book. I read almost all books that I review, so I disclose when I have merely scanned a book such as this.

Why scan? First, I didn't ask for the book. Second, it is 800+ pages long. Third, it is a series of academic articles defending and attacking the Kelly Criterion -- it will have a very specific audience that cares about the academic side of the debate. The popular side is covered by the book, "Fortune's Formula," which I have favorably reviewed here.

The simple way to phrase the argument for the Kelly Criterion is this: you have an advantage versus the markets for whatever reason. You have an edge on average, and the odds are tilted in your favor. You size your bets as a ratio of edge over odds. If your edge is durable, and the odds are calculated right, the optimal decision leads to the best compound growth of capital on average.

Samuelson sits in his ivory tower, where only efficient markets exist. Those of us that are practitioners know that the markets are hard, but not efficient.

To me, the Kelly Criterion is intuitive, whereas the ideas of Modern Portfolio Theory are a stretch. They don't fit the way the market operates.

Painful, impactful, courageous. . .read it!

This short book is one I will never forget. The writer tells us in simple, straightforward language how she managed to survive, and eventually, live, after losing her entire family in the 2005 tsunami. I don't think I've ever read anyone write as simply and stunningly as this - about extreme loss. At each juncture in the months, then years after the tsunami, readers learn how Deraniyagala coped by shutting out parts of her pre-tsunami life, and how she very gradually let memories in. She offers no magical answers, nothing but her years of dealing with this horrendous loss.

I read alot, about 70 books a year, and very very few get five stars. Five stars for me means the book goes way beyond "well-written", or "good story" to the level of impactful in my own life. I can't think of another book about loss that resonates so much - -
I have nothing comparable to her loss but her words help me view my own losses through different lenses.

I will remember this book just as I will always remember Joan Didon's Year of Magical Thinking. . .it's unforgettable. Deraniyagala displays unbelievable courage.

A Memoir of Horrific Loss and, Ultimately, Resilience

Sonali Deraniyagala has undergone a tragedy of such magnitude that it amazes me that she has been able to write about it. On December 26, 2004, she was vacationing in Yala, Sri Lanka when a tsunami came and killed her husband and two children as well as her parents. Sonali managed to hold on to a branch and survive. She is numb and incredulous. She can not speak, for to say the words of what happened would make it real and she feels better off in a fog. "I had learned some facts by now, so I recited them in my head. The wave was more than thirty feet high here. It moved through the land at twenty-five miles an hour. It charged inland for more than two miles, then went back into the ocean. All that I saw around me had been submerged. I told myself this over and over. Understanding nothing."

For a long time, she avoids thinking about her family. She drinks heavily, takes sleeping medication and tries to keep herself in a stupor. She thinks of suicide constantly and imagines different ways that she can take her life. She sees no reason to go on without the family she adored. Her relatives in Sri Lanka watch her day and night but that doesn't stop her from cutting herself, and hurting herself in other ways.

She and her parents are from Sri Lanka and she finds out that her parents' house has been rented. She harasses the renters, a Dutch family, because she wants to sit in the house where her children played and her parents lived, feeling the energy and calmness that is only available to her there.

This book is the story of her journey during an eight year period. Both she and her husband were professors in London and were on sabbatical in Sri Lanka when the wave came. They were due to leave Yala that evening. Now, Ms. Deraniyagala is a guest professor at Columbia University in New York. We travel with her on her geographic journeys as well as her psychic ones as she yearns at first to be demolished and not to think of her family, to a place in her heart where she wants the memories of her family close to her.

She attributes a lot of her healing to her therapist. It is poignant to see how she clutches the memories of her two boys to her heart at the end, one eight years old and one five years old when the tsunami hit. We learn how she met her husband, Steve, while a student at Cambridge. Sonali imagines what her children and husband would be like today. She grasps at these memories in order to make herself whole though she keeps her personal history mostly to herself when with acquaintances. "By knowing them again, by gathering threads of our life, I am much less fractured. I am also less confused....I can recover myself better when I dare let in their light."

This is a brave and heartrending memoir, one that is shocking and horrific at times. I try to imagine what the author is going through and it is impossible. No one but she can feel this pain. I highly recommend this book for its forthright manner and truth, both its despair and ultimately, its resilience in the face of great loss.

But readers expecting a work as brilliant and scathing as Bennett’s plays The History Boys (2004) and The Madness of King George (1991), or even his other short stories, should expect something completely different. A political and literary satire, it pokes fun at the British monarchy while revealing the lasting power of literature. Reviews suggest that The Uncommon Reader should be enjoyed like the sort of reading it espouses: casually, but with a sensitivity to serious things as well.

A charming novella

I was surprised and charmed by Alan Bennett's THE UNCOMMON READER, so much so that I have read it several times and have recommended it to many friends, especially those who love British writers.

I know that in the UK, this book is regarded as an anti-monarchist satire, and perhaps that is exactly how Mr. Bennett indeed intended it. However, whether or not he meant for it to happen, I couldn't help feeling that the author has a secret fondness for his main character, who is the Queen herself. She comes off as far more sympathetic than not, and the reader will be irresistibly drawn into HM's private life. Mr, Bennett's fly-on-the-wall observations are hilarious and poignant.

This is a wonderful story, economically told, and I was sorry to reach the last page because I could have gone on reading it for ages. Don't miss THE UNCOMMON READER; it is a keeper.

Found it fascinating -- until............

Now, folks, I'm no prude! I've run high schools and colleges so NOTHING phases me.
I was pre-reading this novella thinking it'd be an interesting gift for my cousin.....until "eventually Sir Kevin got a call from the special advisor," who apparently didn't like the Queen recommending books to his prime minister. Explaining there are some things he does like........and here he refers to oral sex.......totally out of context AND he doesn't use clinical words to point that out; he describes exactly what he likes.

Purpose in the book?
Shock value?
Characterize the special advisor?
Stress differences in the social classes?
I have no idea - but I do know I'm not ordering new copies to gift to my cousin, my Anglophile friend, or anyone else I know. How sad to have been left with that lasting impression and have the totality of the book shrunken behind that unfortunate exchange........

To Read or not to Read

Everyone who reads on a regular basis knows about the addictive features of such an adventure. As the author leads us to believe the Queen of England simply lacked the time for such things until one day while chasing down her disruptive and incorrigible Corgi's she encounters a young man in the book mobile. Norman as it turns out is employed in the Royal kitchens but is a bookophile. In the coming months he guides the Monarchial pursuit of all things written including his apparent penchant for gay authors. Even after Norman's untimely disappearance her Majesty begins to redefine her challenge to consume as many books as is literally possible. In doing so she finds herself ignoring or at least giving short shrift to her official duties which despite her love of all things regal has started to find them if not boring at least disruptive of her new found regime.

The problem with excessive reading as any ignored spouse or best friend can tell you is that reading is a decidedly singular excursion with the annoying exception of the occasional "Listen to this..." followed by an extracontextual paragraph or so which the listener does not want to hear. The cure of course for reading to exclusion is to write. Will this be the remedy for the good Queen or will she resort to something more drastic? Her attendants and personal handlers conspire to find the solution but of course she takes the bull, as it were, by the horns and preempts them with her usual decisiveness on the burm of her 80th birthday.

A lovely fast read. Alan Bennett is a cheeky Brit with a rather large repertoire to his credit including plays, essays, novels, reviews and the odd appearance on stage. 2.50 GIBO

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department.� Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Good information but I think id rather have a PDF of this product than the real thing which is nothing I thought I would ever hear myself saying.....This book is so flimsy and hard to carry around school. If this was a hard cover, I could see paying over $100 for it would be reasonable, but I'm sick of this spiral bound crap I'm SICK OF IT!!!!! GET RID OF THIS CRAP!!!!!! ITS AWFUL!!! PEOPLE HATE IT!!!!!

What the?!

Cliffhanger alert. The story just stops. No warning, no nothing. Just stops and leaves you hanging. If I would have known that I may not have downloaded it unless I knew that all the books in the story are available.

3-part serial w/clunky storyline

These are mismarketed. These are NOT "books". It is a 3-part serial, with cliffhangers. And not very well written at that. There is better work out there.

MUST READ-SPECTACULAR!!!

The Scarlet Emerald-Stealing the Alpha, Book 1-An exhilarating beginning to a spectacular series. I adore series, you get acquainted with all the awesome characters, and the characters in this serious are sultry, powerful, magical, and full of surprises.

This story features Mel, a sultry, audacious, beautiful leopard shifter; Luke, a gorgeous powerful Alpha lion shifter who is moonstruck over Mel; Bob and Krista Mel's partners in crime, Tina who hires Mel to steal the Scarlet Emerald....

What you'll find in this story; a cast of amazing impressive and engaging characters, spectacular story-line, powerful vivid scene descriptions, potent magic, vampires, witches, heart-rending moments, family issues, pent-up rage, emotions skyrocket, romance, spine-chilling suspense, and a cliffhanger conclusion leaving you awe-struck and yearning for the answers you desire.

Mel knows in her heart that stealing the Scarlet Emerald may lead to a fate worse than death, but the payment for stealing it, means settling a long awaited score.....

WOW fantastic fast paced well written read by a truly gifted author. The characters were convincing and certainly praise worthy. Mel is fearless as cat burglar, but she also sports an honorable persona; The powerful alpha finds himself in a precarious situation with the lovely leopard shifter as feelings towards her begin to flourish. I relished this story; it was fabulous from start to finish, and I eagerly await the next book. If you dote on shifter stories with romance and thrilling danger this is an excellent choice for your library. {I was given a romance arc for a completely truthful review}. In the world of shifters the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. Without reservations I recommend this book and the series.
